Indeed. A couple of years ago there was a case in Santa Clara County Superior Court - San Jose, California - that required a Navajo interpreter. When we couldn't find any in the state, I told the Interpreter Coordinator at the court that I had found a woman from New Mexico who was federally certified and willing to do the job. The coordinator then asked me if she was a legal resident of the US.
According to the chart both parties were close on their views of immigrants during the Clinton and Bush years, and then during the Obama years the Democrats began appreciating immigrants more while the Republicans soured on us - Although the bigger difference comes from Democrats moving up rather than from Republicans moving down. I wonder if this has more to do with demographic changes, or with people who identify as Democrats actually changing their mind about immigrants.
New Mexico has the worst branding ever. They have great food, great music, amazing culture, the landscapes are astonishing; it's basically heaven in the Southwest. Now Google "New Mexican music" or New Mexican food" or whatever and see what you get.
Nativism has always been around, it goes up when the Percentage of people in the USA that were not born here reaches about 15%+, but yeah the chart would indicate that Democrats are the ones that have changed the most, republicans not so much despite the immigration moves, Trump is just seems to represent the base more that prior republican presidents. Republican politicians liked immigration as a source of cheap labor to keep wages down, the base never liked that, but had other concerns to worry about, Pat Buchanan tried to do what Trump did in 2016 back in 2008, or was it was it 2004? I remember an article about why Eric Cantor lost his election in Virginia when he was speaker of the house, his opponent went hard on Immigration, the base liked that, so has able to Primary Cantor, it was a sign of what was to come in the GOP. Regarding the Democrats, that is more difficult, the party moving left, trying to appeal to the Latino (other immigrant groups), counter reaction to Republican talking points, the decline of power by the Unions (who have been iffy about immigration for the same reason that republican politicians liked immigration). All of that probably had an effect.
