Radiolab did a 3 part series how policy got to where it is today. For you science geeks, part 2 has some interesting science-y stuff. Border Trilogy Part 1: Hole in the Fence https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/border-trilogy-part-1 Border Trilogy Part 2: Hold the Line https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/border-trilogy-part-2-hold-line Border Trilogy Part 3: What Remains https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/border-trilogy-part-3-what-remains Really interesting, though on thing which was missed was this: http://articles.latimes.com/1992-06-03/news/mn-647_1_border-patrol - This was huge, and the Border Patrol got heavy criticism, so much I think it changed policy. And not just on pursuits. (And IIRC, there was another one where the vehicle overturned killing a bunch of the undocumented immigrants - I remember 20 in that case.)
Too many asylum seekers are trying to escape a shit-hole country, so Canada is reminding everyone that their open borders invitations has some qualifiers. https://www.economist.com/news/amer...open-door-policy-canada-qualifies-its-welcome To the Trumpists this is music to their ears (the part of people leaving the USA).
Well here's a shocker... The orange toddler is upset that his people weren't able to completely shut down the border. Sessions and Nilesen tried to splain to him, but he no lissen. I once worked for an asshole like Trump, who would call meetings with 30 people and it was always a guessing game as to who he would pick on (one woman ran out of the room in tears and quit on the spot, w/o another job lined up). So I have a shred of sympathy for Nielsen, but only a tiny little minuscule shred, simply because people shouldn't treat a carbon-based life form like that. But she knew what she was getting into, so screw her! https://www.vox.com/2018/5/11/17343784/trump-border-nielsen
It's not just ICE being assholes. Undocumentee pizza delivery guy ratted on by Brooklyn Army base after he drops off food Pablo Villavicencio, an undocumented immigrant from Ecuador who lives on Long Island with his American wife and kids, says he went to the Fort Hamilton base Friday to deliver an order of pasta to a sergeant — flashing his city-issued IDNYC card for entry, as he has done before. But once inside, Villavicencio says another guard demanded more identification — and officials called US Immigration and Customs Enforcement when he came up empty-handed. https://nypost.com/2018/06/06/delivery-guy-detained-by-ice-while-dropping-off-pizza-at-army-base/
I recall this quote from Bourdain about how restaurants across America would shut down if we fully enforced immigration laws. He said his Latino workers were the backbone of Les Halles and everywhere else he worked in NYC. Of course it points out the hypocrisy of right wing attacks on immigrants when whole industries would flounder or completely fail without them. Anthony Bourdain was one of the few celebrity chefs who used his platform in large part to spotlight marginalized communities. He regularly discussed the rank hypocrisy of the American dependence on back-breaking, low-paying immigrant work that co-existed alongside rampant xenophobia and racism. “The bald fact is that the entire restaurant industry in America would close down overnight, would never recover, if current immigration laws were enforced quickly and thoroughly across the board,” he said in a 2007 interview with the Houston Press. https://slate.com/human-interest/20...eant-so-much-to-marginalized-communities.html
Another reason Jefferson Sessions is evil Jeff Sessions brought his grandchildren to his confirmation hearing last January. He introduced them and even held one while members of the Senate Judiciary Committee spoke. In his interview with the attorney general, Hugh Hewitt referenced them, asking, “Can you imagine your grandchildren separated from your children … and the impact on them of that?” Sessions replied: “[T]he United States can’t be a total guarantor that every parent who comes to the country unlawfully with a child is guaranteed that they won’t be, is guaranteed that they will be able to have their hand on that child the entire time. That’s just not the way it works.” https://slate.com/news-and-politics...endure-trumps-abuse-to-deter-immigration.html No, he can't imagine. Since immigrants are less than 'Mericans to him.
This is an "If you don't want to risk being separated from your kids, don't try it" move. Using his own grandkids hammers the point home. His evil beings and ends with the will of the American people. They stamped their okay in November 2016. Smells like home.
The False Choice Between Jailing Children and Separating Families https://truthout.org/articles/the-false-choice-between-jailing-children-and-separating-families/ Moreover, ICE officials are running out of space to jail immigrants apprehended under the new zero-tolerance policy, and are now temporarily moving 1,600 detainees into federal prisons. Border agents likewise told NBC News they are similarly running out of space to shelter separated children at the US border. As of last week, nearly 300 of the 550 children in custody at border stations had been held longer than the legal limit for immigrants in the government’s temporary facilities.
I'd like to ask mega-paranoid MAGA fans: "Where are all those FEMA camps you used to worry about now that you need them?"
Another trial balloon getting tested today: Trump advocates depriving undocumented immigrants of due-process rights
Well sure. Republicans believe in Constitutionalist judges, just ask them. Of course they're going to be against due process, that is what it means to be a Constitutionalist.
There is reporting out now that ICE is offering parents a chance to see their kids if they sign away their right to an asylum hearing. This would literally be using kids as hostages, so we should wait for confirmation before believing it. But you know it’s true.
Thomas Homan is the ICE Director. He should prepare for congressional hearings in early 2019. On June 5, 2018, Homan appeared for a discussion with the Policy Director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which advocates for lower levels of immigration, in which he defended the policy of separating illegally entering parents from their children, and lauded President Donald Trump, saying, "You can like or love this president, but no president has done more for border security and public safety than this president. You cannot deny that." On June 19, 2018, Homan was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN about the Trump Administration’s policy of separating children from parents of families illegally attempting to enter the United States. In that interview, Homan refused to decry the policy, but instead incorrectly claimed that ICE was simply enforcing the law. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Homan
Any doubts that the administration is using children as hostages have been put to rest: The article links to this form. New Trump admin order for separated parents: Leave U.S. with kids or without them
NBC NewsVerified account @NBCNews 1h1 hour ago In his order, the judge said that aside from his immigration status, Pablo Villavicencio has “otherwise been a model citizen," has no criminal history, paid taxes, and has a wife and two young daughters who are all U.S. citizens. https://nbcnews.to/2LDCVTJ - @NBCLatino Pizza delivery man held by ICE after stop at NYC military base ordered released by judge Villavicencio must be released immediately from custody because his removal from the country was “no longer reasonably foreseeable,” the judge ruled.
So does Dandy Don start issuing fines??? Matt PentzVerified account @mattpentz “Abolish ICE” banner held up in the LAFC fan section during the national anthem
Frontline's doing a show on child separation tonight. One detention center is known to the families as the icebox because it's freezing. Sure it's on purpose. Acting ICE commissioner Homan said he didnt hear the tape of the little girl crying. The interviewer was surprised so they played it for him. "Tugs at the heart strings for sure. I've seen a lot of horrible things in 34 years but we have to address the border" The children become fearful and don't want their parents out of their sight when they're finally reunited. Its such a depressing Trump-made clusterf#ck.
