Depends on what you mean by "pretty good." My uncle, 60+, ran Boston in 4:02. My high school coach, mid 20s, ran LA in 2:42. In my world, as a runner, I think a pretty good time is sub 3 hours. Sub 4hr basically means you were able to run the entire race without walking/stopping. Definable an accomplishment, but not earth shattering if you've prepared for it.
For somebody’s one and only marathon I’d say a sub four hours is pretty good considering that at least two or three sources via a quick search showed that as of 2018 an average time for men was 4:22 and 4:48 for women. Like I said, that’s pretty good. In your world as a runner of course you have a different standard for what constitutes a good marathon time again factoring in your history of competitive running. It also makes you “that guy” As a cyclist with many sub five hour solo centuries and a few sub four group centuries I would give mad props to anyone boasting about a sub six century. I tend not to gauge other riders by my standards, that would be unfair and honestly a bit dickish.
I'm only saying what is "pretty good" and how my standard is different than yours. That's all I'm saying, mostly because I know I've followed running/been a distance runner since I was about 12 (my first 5k was when I was 13).
How about Colin Strickland who won the Dirty Kanza 200 recently? 200 miles on gravel road in less than 10 hours. And average speed of over 20 mph. Now that's impressive. https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/meet-racer-won-dirty-kanza-155300257.html
Dunno about that. There are a lot of BigSoccer posters out there who are like me- not dickish in the least and generally unwilling to court or reply to people who are.
Better than impressive, flat out awesome. I was supposed to ride this year but ********ed my back up doing the Murph over Memorial Day weekend. I had no illusions of doing well, I just wanted to finish in the top 25%. I went last year as a SAG mechanic to support friends. I know that you know but that course mileage aside is a repeated kick in the crotch. Honestly the route makes Leadville look like a social ride. I know six guys and a woman that all started. She was the only one to finish...and barely. She’s also world class level triathlete.
Good little interview, not surprised he’s out of ATX. Aside from the egos it’s an all around great cycling scene. Still miss it a little.
Never ran a marathon. My best half marathon was 1:45 on a course that was rather hilly around miles 9 to the finish. Best 10k was 42 minutes. I don't run as much as I used to, instead focusing on rock climbing.
You: Gives the world post after post on BigSoccer comparing the athletic exploits of recent presidents. Also you: "Personally I don't give a shit..."
Support and gear crew. You cruise behind your riders and fix what needs fixing, spare or extra food...and in the case of people, a ride home. We witnessed more mechanicals in one day than in any other multiple day events. The course and distance is on Rubaix level for brutality.
Yeah, I'd cast doubt on 6:00-7:00/mi for 10k when he was in the White House. He was inaugurated when he was 55. Here are the 55-year-old males at the Bolder Boulder 10k a couple of weeks ago. 6:00-7:00/mi would've had him in the top six finishers. So I'm a little skeptical. And the crazy thing is that there's no need for that level of probable bullshit. If you told me that he did around eight or nine minutes a mile while he was in the White House, that to me is impressive for someone in his late 50s and early 60s.
