I know everyone is looking forward to the game against Spain tomorrow, but here's a look back at what got it all started. Maybe it'll serve as a humbling read for us all (wishful thinking). http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=787359.html#the+shot+ends+years+hurt
good find. I never knew there was a rematch between the players in that 1989 game in 2006 .... that's kinda interesting. good story.
Great article--although "40 years of hurt" implies that anyone cared between 1950 and 1990 "40 years of hurt" will more accurately describe my sports existence come my 40th birthday if not for BC hockey and the Quakes
This is great to read. I was too young when it happened, and I didn't know most of the history about it. Thanks for posting it. And as for our last goal from outside the box in the run of play, there was Landon vs. Ecuador (he had at least one from outside the box) and Feilhaber vs. Brazil obviously. I don't know if theres been once since then. EJ will probably score from our own half tomorrow though .
I know you're joking but Sorber in the run-up to 94 and Kirovski against Hugo Boss in 99. Joe-Max might have been beyond the eighteen when he stitched that one against Argie in June 99.
Bingo-- a good two yards outside the box. Here's the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcGA2W4d5_E
------ Soccer was of only nominal concern to most Americans in 1989, but there was a lot riding on the outcome of their last qualifier with Trinidad and Tobago. Months before, the USA was awarded the hosting rights to the next finals, in 1994, but FIFA's decision was pending the national team's qualification for the 1990 finals. As if that pressure was not enough, the Americans had scored only one goal in their last three qualifying games and needed to win in Port of Spain, which was in full party mode, against what was considered the best Trinidadian side of all time, with the likes of Russell Latapy and Dwight Yorke. ------ Had no idea that the decision by FIFA to select the US as hosts of WC1994 "was pending the national team's qualification for the 1990 finals."
