Very old. I was 12 when the South Korea game was on. Watched the playoff with Iran to get us to the Korea game on tv. We won the first leg 3-0 and were 2-0 down at half time in the second leg but managed to hang on for the 3-2 win. They didn't have away goals in those days so after a 0-0 draw with Korea in Sydney and a 2-2 draw (we were actually 2-0 down at one stage but came back) we had to go to a 3rd game which we won. Had to wait another 32 years to qualify again. One thing you learn at my age is things go in cycles, enjoy the good times but don't get too upset when you don't succeed. I'll be disappointed if we don't beat Honduras, but will get over it reasonably quickly.
Squad for the upcoming Honduras games announced. No real changes from the last squad other than the injured Brad Smith. https://www.socceroos.com.au/news/ange-postecoglou-names-preliminary-30-player-squad-honduras-hurdle
Mustafa Amini, Mark Birighitti, Ajdin Hrustic, Awer Mabil and Jamie Maclaren are the five players cut from the extended 30-man squad.
Yeah I was always going to be happy with a 0-0 draw. Definitely was frustrating to see the amount of opportunities we missed. Nothing I haven’t seen before with this team, though.
Good job against Honduras. Hope to see Australia beat them at home. I was around 8 in 1973 and that game, where Australia beat Iran 3:0, made me literally sick! I didn't get to watch the return game in Tehran as we went on vacation, but all the same: it must have been frustrating for Iranian fans to erase 2 of the 3 goals in the first half and not be able to finish the job. Iran and Australia, incidentally, have played 6 World Cup qualifiers even if they have not met since 1997. Iran has won 3 of those (twice, home and away, for the 1978 World Cup qualifiers along with the 2:0 win you mentioned). We have had 2 draws, both in the 1998 qualifiers, including the memorable 2:2 match in Melbourne in 1997, which booked Iran's ticket to France 98. Our only loss was the 3:0 in the 1974 qualifiers which also happens to be the first ever game I recall watching.
Goddammit Australia, Honduras, Peru, and New Zealand... you guys made me stay up all night to see ZERO goals! Grrrrr.... but hey at least it wasn't for a lack of trying on Aussies part. A good result, and I reckon you'll be able to take care of them at home.
Honduras showed very little on the weekend, but Australia's ability to leak goals at any moment worries me when any scored draw means we're out (coupled with the Socceroos terrible finishing). In Australia's last 4 games they have had 65 shots for a total of 5 goals. Just hoping to keep our strong home record intake. Now 47 wins, 9 draws and 1 loss in World Cup qualifiers played at home since May 1981. Though a draw is basically a lose at this stage.
Honduras has no chance: http://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/...11-gzjh92?mc_cid=a3b28c35e6&mc_eid=65d7543d91
Watching the game now. Good luck guys! Boy, the left back Behich is rubbish....don't know if he's done a single positive thing with the ball or without so far haha. Mooy looking awesome.
not a fan of behich myself and he stunk it up today but ironically he was our best player in the first leg
Congrats Australia and wish you the best of luck in Russia. Australia is my second favorite team in this WC.
