No surprise. Baring injuries or a meaningless end of season match we won't be seeing much if anything of Josh for the rest of the Bundesliga season.
Believe it or not, we might see Sargent @ Bayern Munich April 20 because it looks like Bremen play Bayern Munich on 20th then again in Bremen for DFB Pokal semi final on April 24. It will be interesting to see how they rotate the squad.
Watched the first half of today's game the Egg "blew" a chance midway through but Weder attack was limited. Dunno how the 2nd played out. WB strikers did not instill fear.
Osako off the bench assisted the goal, Gladbach dominated vast majority of the game. speaking of strikers the currently unfit Fullkrug is being linked with both Bremen and Gladbach since H96 are very likely headed down.
looks like Bild says that Fullkrug is going to Bremen for $8M (which is the min required pay) and that he'll sign until 2023. Wonder if he's supposed to replace Kruse (expiring 2019 contract and linked with Gladbach) or Old Man Pizarro. Also Kohfeldt has know Fullkrug since he was a kid since Fullkrug came from the Bremen Academy and started his career at Bremen. This move is like Kruse 2.0, ex Bremen youth who doesn't really make it at the club when young is brought back years later. does make one wonder if Sargent ends up going on loan next season?
Kruse has been linked with Spurs on a free, too. Max Eggestein with a big money move to BVB. It's likely Werder Bremen will have some spending money to strengthen the squad at Sargent's expense. Josh is a cheap squad player and useful cover. He isn't going anywhere on loan. I would expect Josh to follow a similar path as J. Eggestein at Bremen. That means another year riding the bench, mostly. Then hopefully a starting role in his 3rd year in the squad.
Yes, indeed it would be interesting with Bremen potentially fighting for a place in Europe and the big Pokal match at the same time. Germany does a nice job with their cup. That Bayern game this week was off the hook. I'm impressed. The best we can hope for is a move up to sub role for Josh I believe. Harnik was the late sub when Josh was unused. Somebody else will start over him with so much at stake.
On the bench, 0-0 at the half: Wir. Von der Bank zunächst: Kapino - Pizarro, Möhwald, Harnik, Langkamp, Sargent, Friedl.#Werder | #svwscf | @scfreiburg pic.twitter.com/3hNrUovYAJ— SV Werder Bremen (@werderbremen) April 13, 2019
Bremen up 2-0 late, all 3 subs made, no Sargent. The result combined with others puts them up to 6th.
Stinks that Sargent was not even on the bench today against BM. He must not be showing much in training nowadays.
Bremen is two points off the pace for a Europa League spot. They are trying to secure that spot and are putting out the players who are experienced and can get them there. I highly doubt it has anything to do with Josh’s play.
I’m reminded of Gen George Picket who was asked how he lost at Gettysburg “ I always thought it had something to do with the Yankees “.
Bremen has a deep, experienced and talented attack. Hopefully the situation clears up for Josh over the summer. ♂️
So, if he doesn't make the bench for the first team, would it mostly mean he will be playing for the reserve squad (for that next match)? I'm kinda confused what his position is with the team overall.
He's in that limbo where you're too good for the reserves and not good enough for the 18, the limbo where Green was with Bayern and Hyndman with B'mouth. Then you're used as a sparring partner for the main team during practices, and watch the games from the stands.
It’s not a bad place to be at 19 for his first year in the league but it’s not something that he can let last. He either needs to improve going into the next year to get PT or go on loan. What he can’t let happen is becoming comfortable and staying in that limbo like Green for a couple of years. Hyndman took a chance with a great coach in a tough league. It didn’t work out but at least he was pushing for loans to go and get PT. Green was fine with his situation. I hope Sarge is neither and just becomes good enough but if not I hope he at least pushes for PT.
its simple mathematics....if a team has 8 options that are all at reasonably similar levels and potentially suitable for 2 spots on the field....the 6 who aren't chosen are not necessarily any worse than the 2 who are....its a numbers game plain and simple. from the club's perspective, they arent any worse off for having an army of attackers waiting in the wings....really haven't seen such a plethora of attackers on any other bundesliga team this year as there are at bremen.... I think the contract extension he signed last month through 2022 speaks volumes about how the club sees him and his future at the club even if he isn't starting right now.
They are pushing for an EL place and were away against the league leaders who were going to push hard for a win, and preferably a blowout win to ramp up the pressure on the chasers. Damage limitation (a blowout loss would damage their EL hopes) and the game management abilities that requires would have been paramount for the Bremen coach. In those circumstances, the best players are the experienced players: if they're fit and on form they'll be picked first, even if the younger ones offer somewhat more going forward. The old hands are less likely to try something that will turn a break into a shock lead - or give away possession on the break and conceding a goal on the counter.
This really is the expected outcome when a highly rated youth international signs with a Bundesliga club. Nobody forced Josh to big time MLS and wait nearly a near to sign with a Bundesliga club. He has made his own bed here. He could have signed with SKC at 16 and likely had near a full seasons worth of match experience at this point. Vermes started a 16 year old in his last match after he started banging in goals. If Josh is sitting in the stands now that is the choice he made. He faces a long grind now as a part time squad player.
Uh, despite his untimely demise (!!), Josh is on the pitch and warming up at the moment. . He's not listed as a starter but I'm assuming he's in the 18.
