Derek Taylor, announcer on Fox Soccer Report, last night credited Ray Hudson with the catchphrase "Cooler than a salmon sandwich in the back of the refrigerator" when doing a La Liga highlight.
While calling this weekends Valencia/Villarreal match: Baraja gets subbed into the match and Hudson says: "Ohhhh, I have to admit I love this man. I love him as much as a man can love another man." Almost immediately, Baraja makes a terrible play giving Villarreal possession and almost a scoring opportunity. Without missing a beat he states. "Ouch, love hurts."
Anyone hear the poetry Ray rattled off in the Real-Mallorca match this weekend? To paraphrase after Reyes' 2nd goal... "...Don Fabio...braver than a matador in high heels and a pink tutu. ...braver than a bullfighter without any knickers... WHAT A STRIKE! Mallorca tried...but the soccer gods were looking down on Real stroking their long white beards saying VAMONOS MUCHACHOS!!!" Then later in the game, mocking Tom Cruise (he was in the stands)... "If he smelled a soccer jock strap, he'd faint dead (?)" Then later, after a Phil Schoen rant about Diarra... "...get me an oxygen tent" classic stuff.
'Braver than a matador in high heels in a pink tutu' was hilarious! Some other ones from that game.... *First time the camera cuts to Tom Cruise : "Tom Cruise....... Hasn't kicked a ball in his life." 'Tears the size of pineapple chunks' - Casillas after Diarra's goal "Horseyface": his name for Van Nistelrooy 'Moya's nerves are dangling like a set of marbles in a spin dry' (after a beckham free kick)
Some AOL blogger is keeping track of him under the heading "Ray Hudson is Insane." And there are some GolTV videos to hear Mr. Hudson in all his glory! http://youtube.com/watch?v=499TYSKaxKY http://youtube.com/watch?v=3x7gu-7WXvI http://youtube.com/watch?v=VjDyQeICLfY
I still want to see what happens when you put Ray Hudson, Bobby McMahon, and Tommy Smyth in the same studio.
Ray makes the big time: National Public Radio! OK, so Scott Simon is kind of a feeb, but you have to forgive him. Ray came up with some locquaciousness: "Brazil is samba football, Argentina is tango football. There'll be dancing in the streets tonight."
A great running archive is kept here. http://hudsonia.blogspot.com/ From the Copa Arg v Mex game: How do you describe magic? How do you describe this? It's virtually impossible. Roman applauds, the ball's dished off for Tevez, Tevez is begging for it back, Messi sees, I see you, mate, I don't need you, watch it, perfect pass by Tevez, Tevez is on for the square ball for the tap in, Lionel says no, I fancy a little bit of Roman in the night. He picks one out of Riquelme's genius book. Messi produces the rainbow and there's a pot of gold at the end of it, that is absolutely pure class in a glass. Ray Hudson, 15:42 2nd
He's got a new favorite now: The Crouchasaurus! "The Crouchasaurus strikes again. Telling ya, footballer! Most unorthodox player, probably, in world football, but his technique is sweet and his danger is omnipresent. He's always going to get this one with those telescopic legs, that's a fabulous ball by Dirk the Dutchman. Brilliantly leading his big man, that's a great finish. Outside of his foot, stabs it home. Peter, the Great!"
Hudsonia, an outgrowth of this thread and the Wikipedia entry (which was vandalized sometime in November; I repaired it yesterday), is now up for a Best of U.S. Soccer award! Woo-hoo!
Had the opportunity to watch Ray this weekend w/ the the Real Betis vs Barca match. A couple of choice quotes:
Some idiot in Wikiland decided to move all of Ray Hudson's quotes from Wikipedia to Wikiquote. Now, some other idiot decided to remove the entire Wikiquote section devoted to Ray Hudson because it was "unsourced." Idiots. Metro fans. Bloviators. Is there anything that can be done to recover all of these Hudsonisms?
It's not that difficult. You just didn't go back far enough in the history. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ray_Hudson&oldid=178647627 Thank me later.
