A thread dedicated to historical events that happened on the current date. On December 22, 1944 a small group of American soldiers were surrounded by a much larger German armored force at Bastogne, Belgium. Upon being offered the opportunity to surrender, the American commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe replied with one word: "Nuts!"
1984 -- Bernie Goetz shoots four black men on a NY subway who were trying to mug him. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york...would-be-muggers-train-1984-article-1.2145601 Concealed carry laws will soon become the norm for the US as there are now 25 states with some form of licensed conceal carry allowances. Though in an interesting note, Virginia becomes the first state, as of yesterday, to not offer reciprocity to other states' concealed carry permits. Fun thread idea....
Telegram from General Sherman to President Lincoln, presenting the city of Savannah as a Christmas gift, December 22, 1864.
2001: Passengers and crew aboard an American Airlines jet en route to Miami subdue Briton Richard Reid as he tries to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes.
Yeah total bummer. Bad heart apparently. Those Blink 182 douchebags will probably live to 100 too. A good one done not long before he passed
You never really know what celebrities are really like. But as the Brits say he seemed like a good bloke. And anyone who could put out 3-4 great albums including London Calling is OK in my book.
As bad a rap as Newark gets, nothing prepared me for the shitpile that is central & western PA. Was there for 3 days on a business trip like 5 years ago. Surprised the suicide rate's not in the high 90s.
Newark has things going for it, a university district, a performing arts center, the Ironbound (some great Iberian/Brazilian restaurants), and Prudential Center (with Red Bull Arena right across the river). Some not nice stuff for sure, but it's no say Camden or Trenton.
I was in Pittsburgh for a week in 2005. Greyest/brownest city I've ever been to in my life (the sky and architechture, not the people. The sun didn't shine thru the clouds for even an hour the whole time) but it was March, so there's that. Much as I love the Steelers, I don't think I could live in such a drab (and pretty obviously blue-collar) environment.
Newark's 25 mins from NYC on the PATH so that helps. And closer to Jersey City which is booming right now. Was in a town - think it was Clearfield, PA - that had a brown haze and my rental was covered in dust. I asked a local "what is that?" and he says "oh, that's just the ethanol plant." Lovely. On top of that this was the time that everyone and their brother was selling out to the natural gas producers. A new gold rush and environmental nightmare.
On this day, Jesus was born...or something like that. Also it was the German v. England unofficial international soccer match, December 25, 1914.
