Given the group, yes, it will be difficult, but I am confident that our boys will be in London playing at the Olympic games.

Iraq have been hosting games for a while now in the North, so it's a safe as you get. It's probably just as safe as playing any other Mid East team on their own patch.

the Olyroos enter the business end of the campaign with their opening Group B match against the United Arab Emirates in Adelaide on Wednesday night, filling one of Asia's three spots at next year's Olympic Games looms as the biggest challenge of Vidmar's coaching career.

He's optimistic. ''There's good spirit, the players are super keen and what I like most is they're a close, tight, group,'' he says. ''The important thing is to win your home games, which is why we need to get off to a good start.''

Against a UAE side that includes players already capped at senior level, that can't be taken for granted. By contrast, Vidmar has only one senior international in his 18-man squad. Instead, he has a selection of players drawn entirely from the A-League because the dates for the qualifying matches are not protected by the FIFA calendar. By Vidmar's admission, he would ''definitely'' have picked five or six European-based players - likely to include Brent McGrath, Aaron Mooy and Matthew Leckie - if the scheduling had been different.

The Australian under-23s were fortunate to finish 0-0 when outplayed by their skilful opponentsat Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium.

The visitors dominated the opening half and perplexed the Olyroos with a series of attacking forays, most featuring Ahmed Kalil, a striker who won the 2008 Asian Young Footballer of the Year award.

Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar said his side's "performance was not up to scratch"

"It was certainly a difficult night for us," he said.

"We just struggled all night, even to control the ball.

"We couldn't find our rhythm for whatever reason ... maybe it was a little bit of nerves because we started very jittery."

I think second place is the realistic goal now, but from what I've seen so far we don't have a good enough team to do that in this group.

Blunt Olyroos face battle to make London

Aurelio Vidmar's side can have few complaints, having now failed to score in their opening three matches. The fact that two of those scoreless draws have been at home is particularly damaging to the cause. Australia's proud tradition of having played at every Olympics since 1988 is under threat.

The Olyroos' creative fulcrum of Mitch Nichols and Oliver Bozanic struggled to make an imprint, the passing was too slow and too square, and when possession was lost both players couldn't stay with their quick-breaking opponents Fozil Musaev and Oybek Kilichev.

Whether it's Vidmar's system, or simply the talent at his disposal, it's clear where the issue lies. "Obviously to win we need to score, so we need to take more responsibility in front of goal," Vidmar said.

The wild one's been called up, and details on camps, no friendlies, are below.

Bulut was among the new faces in Aurelio Vidmar's 20-player squad for the 2012 London Olympic Games third round matches, joining Melbourne Victory's Isaka Cernak, Adelaide defender Antony Golec and Brisbane Roar midfielder Rocco Visconte.

Sydney FC midfielder Terry Antonis was also named in the squad, subject to a fitness test. It is understood Central Coast duo Mustafa Amini and Bernie Ibini are on stand by to cover for Antonis.

Among the overseas contingent who may be available to be selected for the UAE match are Aaron Mooy (St Mirren, Scotland), Tommy Oar (FC Utrceht, Netherlands) and Mathew Leckie (Borussia Monchengladbach, Germany), with their club commitments ruling them out of the Uzbekistan match.

The bulk of the squad will depart Australia on 29 January for a pre-match camp in UAE before heading to Tashkent to face Uzbekistan at the JAR Stadium on Sunday 5 February.

The UAE match will be played at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday 22 February.
