Just outside the U20 team. not eligible, but Zenit is no small club if he were to make a first team appearance anytime soon it would help.

US National playing for Zenit SPb U-21s.

I just found out that Zenit has a US National playing on the Zenit U-21 squad, same place where Arshavin and Kerzhakov started:

    http://www.fc-zenit.ru/info/personInfo.phtml?id=334

Just started this season, off to a decent start. I only noticed because of a club press release on the big boys page announcing his return to training after an injury suffered against the Rubin Kazan U-21 team.

Too cool. Although he's obviously born of Russian parentage here, he's the only non-Russian playing for the U-21s. I can't remember them ever taking a non-Russian (citizen) for the academy/youth team. I think if he held joint citizenship, his citizenship would be listed as Russian (which is how they list it for the senior side holders of joint citizenship.)

Dammit! I thought it was another American. Instead it was Eugene Starikov who I already knew about! Oh well! Starikov has banged in a few goals for the 2nd team so hopefully he continues to progress and gets his chance with the 1st team.

Sorry for the dupe. Mod, please merge threads.

One of his colleagues made the bench this past weekend for the senior squad; Zenit is VERY thin at forward now, having just sold Pogrebnyak to Stuttgart. With Advocaat leaving soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the U-21s get picked for senior side matches against the lesser lights of the RPL at home.

He looks American to me. If he zipped over the pole for the games in the States, he could make the trip in no time.

Threads merged. And please keep us updated, Zenit!

Actually, I'm going to change the thread title as well.

What are the chances he is on the radar?

Maybe yanks-abroad should make contact with him?

    Re: Eugene Starikov?

One of the AFZ guys and one of our FSU regulars thought they heard the news that he was in the process of obtaining his Russian citizenship, but couldn't provide a link or verification. After Googling the RuNet for about an hour last night, I couldn't find confirmation of that either. It makes sense for him to obtain it, but if in fact he ever got good enough or played 1st team soccer with Zenit to warrant worrying about where he might play - a native born Ukrainian choosing to play for Russia (given a choice) isn't unprecedented, but I'd bet against that. Assuming the hypotheticals above - my guess is whoever first came calling, Ukraine or the USA.

I'm going to email the team's press affairs department today and see if I can get a little more info about him.

Evgeny now has 6 goals in 889 minutes for the Zenit U21s. That is definitely a respectable scoring average.

They are out of season, IIRC. I haven't heard anything recently but I know he was playing decently for the reserves. Hopefully it is enough to catch onto the 1st team when the new season begins.

His stats aren't too shabby. Played 22 matches, started 10 and scored 6 goals. IIRC, towards the end of the campaign is when he solidified a starting spot.

Zenit wants to loan him out. Reserve squad coach interview:

    http://www.radiozenit.ru/news/sport/18784

    Loose translation:
"We are not clear about his future. Agent says that he (Starikov) needs to find a club. While club is not found we need to let him train because he is under a contract. His future will be decided by agents and club management"

Re: Eugene Starikov at Zenit St Petersburg

I take this as a positive that they are willing to loan him out for playing time. Last I looked he had played well in the U-21's so hopefully a loan is a step in the right direction. I'm interested to see where this goes----if he's loaned to a mid to low table RPL side or even a 1st Division side.

BTW, when does the season start? I know they are in the midst of preseason. So I wonder what the time table is for Eugene to land a loan.

RPL 2010 season starts on March 12th.
    First Division starts in 43 days (i guess it's March 26-27th :) ).

Starikov better get Russian citizenship and then play few good matches for some lower RPL side or even 1 division team. Because of ridiculous foreign limit in Russia, RPL teams are ready to pay stupid money for just about any russian player who can juggle soccer boll 5 times. I'm really not even exaggerating it's a time-proven scheme - 10-12 good games for FC Sibir or FC Spartak-Nalchik and Zenit will take him back and give him 1 billion dollars contract. But the key is russian passport. Without this paper he must be a damn good to make good career in Russia. 1 division has even more strict foreign limit.

What is foreign limit right now in RPL? How many international slots each team has?
