Not sure if both of these have already been posted and I'm too busy at work right now to check, but just in case... After rough start, Earthquakes players adjusting to new system under Almeyda Almeyda: Quakes style more than man-to-man marking
That is a very interesting clip, and it made me laugh. But this is not Almeyda ball. It looks more like beehive ball.
I was reading through the comments on a Twitter post made by Almeyda wishing his old club Chivas a happy anniversary of founding and the comments make you realize that the man is a cult hero in Mexico. Twitter has a handy translate feature to see for yourself.
Argentine cult hero elsewhere in Latin America? Hmmm. Quakes should do a t-shirt of Almeyda in the classic Che style.
All the merchandise in the team store is so boring...seems as though no one in that enterprise has any imagination.
And once the t-shirt catches on, they can start selling the Quakes-logo Che-berets, as well. It will be hipster heaven.
Though it is cute in absence of context, I would be disgusted to see Che themed Quakes gear. If they want to get creative, I hope they go with something a little less loaded.
I'm no Che adherent. But it's art. And the original is already divorced from context. Why not have a series of t-shirts that are take-offs on well known works. Maybe an Obama-Hope riff. Or a Quakes riff on American Gothic or Mona Lisa. The antidote to corporate blandness is a bit of an irreverent edge. The Che-Qvara tee hits the note perfectly, in my mind.
And if you have a problem with Che... wouldn't he have been more insulted by some parody of him using a goofy mascot to sell merch for a soccer team?
...You say you got a real solution Well, you know We'd all love to see the plan You ask me for a contribution Well, you know We're doing what we can
I am going to invoke Godwin's law: so a spoof on Hitler? I think Che isn't "just another guy". He is in a pantheon with Mao, Stalin, Hitler, etc. of those who you just shouldn't reference. And others will disagree and they will love Che, of course, but that isn't really a counterpoint, because the whole point is that in a world of things you can refer to, referring to the ones that many find objectionable shouldn't be done lightly. If Hitler is too severe, maybe think Ben Gurion or Arafat? "It is just art that references Arafat". You'll piss people off for no reason. That is no way to do business.
There is a hilarious Earthquakes version (circa 2011) of this widely employed Hitler spoof. (If I have a chance later I will try to track it down. It's been posted here before.) https://www.theguardian.com/media/2008/sep/28/youtube.internet
