Marvell Wynne is currently being held out of training and games after a heart abnormality was discovered during the annual entrance physical and subsequent follow-up evaluations. He is currently undergoing further evaluations and the team will release more information once those evaluations have concluded. Wynne, 30, is an 11-year MLS veteran with 301 career appearances. He started 63 of the Quakes’ 68 regular season matches during the past two seasons.
I hope that it proves to be nothing. He's been one of our better players over the past couple of years.
Had the chance to talk to him after a home game......really nice guy and took time to talk to all the fans lined up after the game....hoping for a speedy and full recovery.
One of the differentials...there are several possible things, including cardiomyopathy. A lot may come down to whether at his age Marvel wants to take risks by playing. I still hope it's no big deal, but I suspect if it were just a little innocent murmur or something like that, he'd have an echo and already be back.
Moving Cato to right mid primarily also means that Dom has another excuse to not play Tommy ("well there are guys ahead of him right now"), which is always one of his season's objectives - to find ways to limit Tommy's minutes.
The team is overloaded with defenders. Wynne being out is unfortunate because he's established himself as the most versatile defender on the team, and arguably the best, but there is plenty of coverage regardless of the outcome.
Anyone heard anything on Wynne since mid-february? Last report I saw was "running tests, will release more later".
Breaking: #Quakes74 defender Marvell Wynne considering retirement.— Quakes⚡️ (@QuakesForever) March 15, 2017 so breaking I didn't even know about it.— Marvell Wynne II (@marvwynne22) March 15, 2017
QuakesForever knows Wynne and his thoughts better than Wynne knows himself. Reality has been forever changed simply by this dude observing Wynne, as he has now thought about retirement at least a little bit...
I really hope that Marvell gets better, and soon. Whether his soccer career is over or not, I hope that he has a long, happy, healthy life. Good luck dude!
GREAT NEWS-Successful 9 hour open heart surgery for @marvwynne22 yesterday. Looks fantastic today & plans @SJEarthquakes return next season! pic.twitter.com/nQApp11feI— Rob Stone (@RobStoneONFOX) March 24, 2017 1. Great news, good luck to him 2. He will be 31 and coming off heart surgery and not having played in a year, I'm not sure it's in the Quakes' best interests to bring him back in 2017
Man, did not realize he'd be undergoing open heart surgery. Thankfully it went well. In terms of what he might be capable of post recovery, Wynne has always been extremely fit (based on appearances, anyway). Assuming he can work out to the same degree he was able to prior, he could still be a useful defender. I'm not sure how long his current contract is for, that also obviously plays a role. There's a long time between now and next season, so we'll have to piece this one together over that time as more information comes in. Not sure how close to the chest the team and Wynne will play it, but I am hopeful he can extend his career. He's a good player.
No pun intended? I'm very happy for him that it seems to have gone well, and would be happy for him if he could continue his career in some capacity.
Wow - sorry to hear that he required surgery. I wish him all the best for a full recovery, and success in whatever comes next.
