Wanted to create a new thread for us to discuss how Stewart is doing his job as GM, now that he has officially been announced. Quite a bit of info in the USSF article linked below. He takes over the position on August 1. https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...amed-general-manager-of-us-mens-national-team
USSF headquarters are in Chicago at Soccer House. https://www.ussoccer.com/about/about-us-soccer/us-soccer-house
in this position he will have to say "heres some managers, you could hire one if you want". needs to be able to say really vague things about playing style and culture without having any actual input. no responsibilities or input with youth teams. yeah, im pretty sure he can handle it. that result predicting octopus could probably point a tentacle at one in a row of manager headshots, too. still- i feel this is a real missed opportunity to bring together warring factions in us soccer fandom- this utterly inconsequential job would have been a perfect way to bring klinsmann back into the fold. a perfect position to spout off platitudes while never actually affecting anything.
Completely agree. And as @Suyuntuy pointed out in the other thread, his comments on hiring a coach are contradictory, to put it charitably.
Would he work in Chicago or the new Training Center in KC? Either way, I think they will put a committee together to interview coaches. Stewart says he has a list ready. They can do their background checks and what not and the coach can be ready to go Aug. 1st if that is what Earnie wants. I wonder if he will be in France on Saturday. More than happy with this hire. The job is nebulous but it is a decision making point. We basically went from Sunil and Flynn making decisions about soccer matters to Earnie Stewart.
While he may be scouting on his own now, we may miss out on a coach or two who are snapped up immediately after the World Cup while Earnie is didling around with Philly.
but on the bright side- we will have only wasted just over one full year to do it. cordeiro really needs to slow down with all this change and turning things around- im getting whiplash over here.
Wherever he feels comfortable. Being close to the team is important, being close to USSF headquarter isn't.
My guess is that he will Bert Vogal as head coach. Jokes aside, he checks the boxes and is a good choice for USMNT GM.
Hopefully Chicago... Although, when it comes to organizational corruption, no one does it better than Chicago!
I think his immediate tasks are pretty clear 1) Hire a new head coach 2) Do a thorough review of the player pool 3) Figure out what the rest of the job is. What's not part of the job is hiring youth coaches. That's pretty clearly for Tab.
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/amp...coach-dave-sarachan/w8um6zdwzab612fpd0hcgqeoa His first few interviews have left a lot to be desired from me. Not saying he wouldn't be a good GM or TD, but with every interview he does it feels more and more figurehead-ish, which we all feared it would be. He talks about how he wants to improve communications with the leagues of the US, which sounds fine. Talking about the coaching search "...In that search, I’ll make sure to speak to those that are very important in the search process and together, in the end, we’ll come with a recommendation toward our board to make the best decisions." Look at the power, he gets to talk to people then talk to Flynn who talks to the board who gets the final say. Then in the SI article, Nico Romeijn who is the sporting chief, says it's the sounding board of the coach. What are his assistants for? http://amp.si.com/soccer/2018/06/06/earnie-stewart-us-soccer-usmnt-general-manager They talk about how he will come with a blueprint and everyone else implements it. No power over youth team or coaches. But he can help come up with a nutritional plan. Oh boy. I think of the people who were considered, he would have done really well it it were more than just a bureaucratic shuffle. We'll see though.
They came out with this announcement while reporting that Marsch was rumored for RBull Salzburg position. It looks like this will be the GOB cycle with Earnie and 3G's at the helm and MLS hovering above. To paraphrase Cassius speaking of Julius Caesar: "Cassius: "Why, man, he doth bestride the narrow world Like a Colossus, and we petty men Walk under his huge legs and peep about To find ourselves dishonourable graves.". The Colossus of Rhodes was a huge statue over the entrance to the port of the city of Rhodes, and the ships passed under the legs to get into the port/harbor.
