Another "official" player thread. Really? Having 15 of those wasn't enough?

No offense Vic but we don't need another "official" player thread cluttering up our boards.

The "official" threads were created to keep individual player discussions from spilling out into 20 different threads. They actually consolidate news posts and sort them by player. It has the added benfit of being able to go back and find news articles about a player easily.

The official part is as much convention as anything else. The idea is modeled after an old thread on Donovan that was created to get all the crazy baby jesus crap into a single thread.

Wow. That was a really good and clear explanation. You don't get many of those on these boards. It's like a breath of fresh air. :)

So we have 20 different threads on 20 separate players, what's the difference?

We can instead have 20 different threads for each of those 20 separate players, which would add up to about 400 separate threads on 20 separate players.

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

He was a great college GK. I followed a lot of him during CAL's games and playoff run this year. He saved the day for CAL on many occasions. Its sad that CAL bowed out on pk's after a 3-3 draw to eventual champion Akron. They possibly could have won the whole thing had it not been for pk's.

Does CAL currently have a GK just as good to replace him?

Also, does MLS have a rule this season that each team must have three GK's on the senior roster (I thought I read that somewhere, but I can't remember where)? If so, David Bingham be the Quakes' second or third GK behind Jon Busch?

So far it looks like Weber will take the #2 and Bingham will be #3, especially since it's Bingham's first season as a pro and Weber has a good history of being a solid #2 for the quakes. If all goes to plan though, Bingham could jump up the depth chart in the coming seasons.

MLS does not require teams to carry 3 keepers, but if they don't, then they are not eligible to sign a keeper from the Emergency Pool if one of their 2 keepers gets injured. So from a practical perspective, you'd think that most, if not all, teams will carry 3 keepers.

Well it's been reported that with the roster increase, they do now.

With Brian Edwards having recently been waived, it does indeed seem that this season will begin with a GK corps of John Busch / Andrew Weber / David Bingham, in that order.

For some reason I'd forgotten that the roster space had increased for this season, so having three keepers on the senior roster will be even less of a burden. :)

I really wonder exactly how much of his Generation Addidas $100k a year contract the Quakes are responsible for? I'm not sure but I don't think these players count against the salary cap. If they do I think its minimal.

It's likely that that, along with the increased roster size this season, have helped MLS teams to decide to keep three goalkeepers on the senior roster.
