Seems like every favorite team has looked lackluster in these knockouts. Credit to Japan though, they're playing well
Yeah, Japan has that WWC experience too. They seem tougher mentally atm. The Universo commentators are enjoying this match.
So many missed chances hopefully it doesn't come back to bite them. Dutch keeper keeping them in the game. Where was this Japan in the group stage
@josescorp Japan has a history of starting slow in the group stages and getting fired up when it counts. The same happened in 2011.
Why was the play called dead simply because the Dutch players surround the ball? We making up new rules now?
Sad for Japan. What a shitty way to go out due to a bad call. They should've converted one of the many chances they got though. That was probably the best match of the WC so far, I didn't think both teams would keep that intensity for the full 90 mins. Hope Italy pulls the upset.
Actually she hadn't been benched for technical reasons: she had picked up a slight injury in training after the Argentina match.
That’s good to know. She’s going to tear it up next year in the olympics. I see a bright future with her career.
https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...able-selection-the-us-got-lucky-against-spain Hope Solo wrote this after the Spain match. It's a short read, but long story short: US defense and GK is not cutting it, and Ellis needs to switch up the attack sooner because they're gonna rely on that throughout the tournament. She also picked France to take it all at the beginning of the tournament, but after that game vs Brazil, France is looking iffy.
I think it has to do more with the fact that Brazil took them to extra time, rather than playing poorly. However, France managed to stop a Brazilian goal right on the line in extra time. If they didn't I think it would have gone to penalties. Both the US and France did poorly in the round of 16, however the difference is that the US did poorly because they were actually exposed, and France did poorly because they did not play up to their level. France has more information in its hands about the US, than the US has about France. If the game goes into extra time, I'm giving a slight edge to the US just because I feel they have better depth. But this is soccer where anything can happen and now even more so due to the VAR, so who knows.
From what I saw in the second half and extra time, it was a combination of France not playing up to its potential (as usual) and Brazil going at them putting up a fight. Brazil actually had a couple chances late in the game where they could've won if they had better finishing. France is a better team than Spain, so if they pressure the US the way that Spain did they can beat them, no question. They have the talent. But then you gotta factor in VAR and the terrible officiating, anything can happen.
