The Niners use a fog horn to tell people it's about to start, maybe the Quakes need something similar. But I do like the the idea of cheaper food.
Having lower prices before the game starts, then jacking them up right before seems like a real good way to anger a lot of fans, especially those who don't have the luxury of taking time off work or whatever to accommodate the stupid midweek games that plague the league. Nothing gets people in the mood to buy overpriced foodstuffs like explicitly showing them how much they're getting ripped off.
Timbers fans stand in line for hours before the game to get choice standing spots in the curva. They also pay exorbitant prices to drink at nearby pubs because there is no tailgating. And unlike Avaya, Portland's stadium does not open a full two hours before game time.
Directly or indirectly, it could have a lot to do with everything as Portland fans can afford to do things much differently than Quakes fans can. Don posted, “they pay exorbitant prices to drink at nearby pubs”. For as long as I remember or at least since 1974 , with the cost of living (as well as other interests) in San Jose and the entire Bay Area , very few soccer or Quakes fans for that matter , that I know can afford the luxury of paying “exorbitant prices” anywhere. That includes before or after games. Even if there are a handful of fans who can afford it, other than maybe going to the Britania Arms , where else do fans gather and spend a lot of money and how often? I don't know of too many places nor have I ever seen it.
Yeah and that’s still less a lot than San Jose where one bedroom apartments are $2,300 and a studio is $1,900.00 a month. Those are just rents but average mortgage payments may even be double if not triple if not more for most area residents..
Regardless of that though, my initial point remains, there is still no evidence or history that Quakes fans “pay exorbitant prices to drink at nearby pubs”. I also seriously doubt they will in the future. They may in Portland but not here and I’m sure the high cost of living will have something to do with it. I don’t see how it wouldn’t be a reason or a factor.
Average rent in what people think of as "New York" is $4,041. But that's just Manhattan, where most NYCFC and Red Bulls' fans don't live. Average rent in the Bronx is $2,167 and in Queens. Average rent in Queens is $2,194. Average rent in Brooklyn is $2,675. The average apartment is a 1 bedroom 700-750 sq. foot. A pint of craft beer will set you back $6-$9. Anyway, this has nothing to do with soccer as many fans live in rent controlled or family owned properties, or live out in the suburbs.
It has everything to do with it if you can’t afford to spend money you don’t have. Also , when exactly have say, 500 to 1000 Quakes or soccer fans partied at any pub spending exhorbitant amounts of money? I can’t recall many from 1974-1988 or from 1996-2005 , before the move to Houston. I don’t remember many when they were at Buck Shaw from 08-2014 or from 2015 until now that they are at Avaya either. Maybe during the 1994 World Cup in Los Gatos and Palo Alto but that was most Brazilian fans during the tournament and before MLS and that’s all I can remember. I was living in Europe after the two MLS Cup wins so I wouldn’t know about that time. I do recall reading some fans going to LA for the final though.
Again how does what people can or can not afford in SJ have to do with what people in Portland can or can not afford?
It may or may not pertain to anything but I was quoting Don who posted this..... Therefore , if Don singled Timbers fans out because they “ pay exorbitant prices to drink at nearby pubs because there is no tailgating. unlike Avaya”, there are many reasons behind why they can afford to pay a lot of money at pubs before or after games......and once again, we can’t compare ourselves to the people in Portland because they are living in different (not to mention much cheaper) world.

I saw Kraft during the Pats KC game last night. I was wondering when he would finally start his own SSS... Nice to see them at least get the training facility.
Just waiting for that first truck load of sod to come in from Colorado. Ooooh-baby! #allianzfield #mnufc pic.twitter.com/NCKUeElcuJ— Brian Quarstad (@IMSoccerNews) October 19, 2018 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Apologies, I read it wrong. I thought initially Colorado was installing new sod instead of mnufc getting new sod that was coming from Colorado...
