You can tell that Abby comes from a very large, but weird family.
They are normal Americans in a way, but yet very unorthodox at the same time.
They are still great Americans though.

Abbster did damage control apparently an hour ago. She apologized if her comments were offensive.

    Problem now is....

I hope her comments don't get her a suspension.

Assuming they don't, Abby is like one of your older relatives who has reached the age where they can say anything they want, no matter how outrageous. After all, she does have a few notches on her belt for this team and this sport.

Abby's comments were pretty careful, she didn't make an absolute accusation, she inserted waffle words where needed. It would be very difficult for FIFA to take action against her.

Suspend her for the China game (i.e. one game suspension).
If the USWNT does beat China still without Hoilday, Rapinoe, Wambach (>50% chance they still do), then it will be a huge psychological boost to get those players back just in time for Germany/France, and they'll be well rested.

Besides, if enough players are not available by that time, then maybe O'Reilly is forced to get on the field by default.

Here's Abby's quotes from her interview from 2019....
two days before their first WWC group match against Switzerland in France.

"I think we have the most experienced squad going in to this tournament. And I fully trust Coach B.J. Snow. He believes in us veterans in getting it done. Assistant Coach Montoya also has experience in the past from our youth program. This is our chance to finally achieve some glory together and we're going to attack this World Cup with great effort. It's so great to get Cat Whitehill back on defense. She was one of my favorite defenders I ever played with, when we were together at the Washington Spirit about a decade ago. Cat was certainly one of the best players at UNC nearly two decades ago as well. She brings such great wisdom and experience back there."

"The thing I like most about our team is that we're now connecting 3 passes in a row before finally turning it over. That's a far greater improvement than the last World Cup. I know I said that was going to be my last World Cup, but 19 was always a lucky number for me at the casino so I couldn't pass up in coming out of retirement to join the team at this World Cup. I also love Paris so much. I know that I haven't played club soccer since 2014. I know that I haven't played more than two send-off matches or friendlies in the past few years. But now I'm back, and I'm now the best Abby Wambach ever on the pitch at age 39. I've been working on my own fitness program away from everyone else for the past 32 months now. It's going to revolutionize how independent fitness is looked upon. Mama Rampone always inspired me. I don't feel like I'm 40, and I'm not 40 yet so no one should be critical of my comeback."

"Yes, I do love that Pinoe has neon orange hair now. It matches our new kits from Nike. It's a good thing we don't have Netherlands in our group. We have Switzerland instead. I feel that Rampone can still chase down Bachmann. At age 44, she is still ticking. Shannon Boxx is now an outside back, and she brings such a unique American presence there. And putting Julie Johnston as a super sub up top was brilliant by Coach Snow. What she lacks in super sub pace at forward late in the match, she makes up for by slide tackling for everything else. We just have to ensure that Zakiya Bywaters can stay central on the pitch. No need to get her out wide. Coach Snow knows what is best for her. He coached her at UCLA, when he was there for like a full year stint as their head coach. We've got that great UCLA connection going on in managing our national team. And it's good to know they finally took my advice at luring Becky Burleigh as an assistant coach. She's such a great defensive coordinator for us. I had to convince Sarah Huffman the other day that she is the best assistant coach to have in the entire world. Sarah is hard to convince sometimes, but it's good to have her paired up with Cat on defense. The only question with this squad is our goalkeeping situation. We had a lockout there, with the other goalkeepers going on strike. It's been a publicity nightmare at that position for a few years now. But we do have a D-3 starting goalkeeper from her college years who does have some goalkeeping experience over the past 5 years at some point. We also have the NAIA goalkeeper who can leap really high but unfortunately she has the shortest arms I've ever seen. Her wingspan is only 4'2", but she can make herself tall vertically, not so much horizontally though. But regardless, this is our time."

    ^ Humorous satire

In real news though, (thankfully) Rampone and Boxx were only put on pitch ceremoniously to close out the Nigeria game for them to be able to have on their resumes "Played in X World Cups". Ellis isn't stupid and won't use that many oldies in actual matches. To Ellis' credit, we do have new faces like Morgan Brian and Julie Johnston playing. Plus Kilingenberg , while not as young, is still new to the NT and is tearing stuff up all over the pitch. I know it's fashionable to demonize Wambach and Ellis as old and clueless respectively but we should try to be realistic: this USWNT looks a lot like the old Italian mens teams. Grinding out wins through experience, craftiness, and superior defense. Is it entertaining viewing always? Certainly not. Does it bother me that we don't out-possess all our opponents? It sure does. But can we still be highly successful like this? Yep.

For one more game maybe. They should handle China in spite of their shortcomings. But after that it will be over if they can't find a way to put some kind of offense together. If the midfield and forwards can't start combining better, no MUCH better, than China will be our last win the we are going home.

We'll see, I don't know how things will radically improve in such a short span of time. Maybe we will blow out China 5-0 or something and start an Attacking Revolution out of nowhere but I just don't see it. I still think we can "eke out" a win versus France or Germany, but obviously France would be a lot easier.

Ya..... that's why I'm secretly rooting for France to beat Germany. I really feel more comfortable facing France than Germany.

I don't. Based on matches in the last quad The USWNT matches up better with Germany's style of play and finds more space against the German defense on the counter because Germany presses more aggressively. France's defense recovers better.

In other words, will the USA team find a way to score more goals or will they have to rely on the quintet of Johnson, Klingenberg, Krieger, Sauerbrunn, and Solo to bail them out and win the Women's World Cup for the team? Maybe if the USA wins one of the defenders will win the Golden Ball.

Oh no, we won't be going home. We'll be going to the 3rd place game! To play England! On July 4th! Come on that will be way more fun than maybe winning this silly little tournament.

Well it will be more fun until England beats us.

think we'd win that game. i just re-watched the matchup from feb. dont know how many of their starters played but we completely dominated possession. won only 1-0, though england had a goal incorrectly called offside. harris started in goal for her 6th international appearance, was tested only once and made a really nice save on it, though tipped it right to an opponent who kicked it in for said called back goal. holiday was solid that game at dm. she distributed and kicked set pieces well and assisted the morgan header for the lone goal. press was placed on the right but played inside the entire game and looked promising as a cm or cam, made several nice passes. klingenberg and morgan had good games. on the down side, krieger was as usual a giveaway machine on the offensive side of the field. brian was mostly ineffective but showed flashes of potential. possibly lloyd's worst game of the year. rapinoe didnt play. dunn came in as a lb, looked like a really athletic, promising project. made me realize dunn is the female version of yedlin. they couldnt be more similar.

Yeah I saw the vid of her speech. I kind of like her intense speeches but I hope the other players aren't just like rolling their eyes at her during it. As long as her speeches impact the rest of the team positively I'm all for them, they seem awesome to me anyway
