Okay I'll play. With only five picks I can't imagine we will have a player selected. Here are the players I think our FO will pick:

    Exempt:
    Tommy Thompson
    Andrew Tarbell
    Nick Lima
    Jackson Yeuill

    Eleven Picked:
    Fatai Alashe
    Darwin Ceren
    Anibal Gadoy
    Jamir Hyka
    Andres Imperiale
    Florian Jungwirth
    Shea Salinas
    Marco Urena
    Vako
    Wondo
For eleventh Danny Hoesen if a deal is made for him, and Affolter if we don't.

I'm assuming the FO will leave Bingham unprotected since he looks destined to leave, and this Bernardez because he is older and was starting less.

I look forward to seeing how close I get.

Who's left? Seems like hardly anybody, of the players that saw time on the field last year. Sarkodie, Quincy, Bings, Muma, who else?

Unless someone want to take a big chance on Simon Dawkins or sees real potential in Kip Colvey I just can't see one of our players being selected.

I'm so thinking that LAFC is going to draft Salinas. His record on expansion drafts so far is 2-0 (Philly, Vancouver), so it's in the books!

I think he'll actually get protected this time.

It makes sense to not protect Quincy because his salary is a bit out of line right now. Don't think he'll get picked. And guys like Colvey and Mfeka, while I think highly of both, it is highly unlikely they'd get picked, when LAFC will only pick 5 from the while league.

Muma is someone they may want to protect just because it would be kind of a shame if he couldn't finish out his career here. He has played for the shirt. I know, appeal to sentimentality, but sometimes you should IMO. Hopefully he agrees to a bit of a pay cut also if they tell him they want to keep him another year but not necessarily as a starter.

I don't want to see guys like Muma or Shea Salinas in L.A.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised to see Alashe there - wouldn't like to see that either. But he was a Dom favorite ("you know sometimes I look at him and I swear it's Rico Clark"), and seems to have fallen a little out of favor in the Leitchian regime.

I don't think we're in danger of losing any players, considering LAFC only gets five picks, maybe Bingham if he doesn't move to Europe... here is my guess:

    Exempt:
    Andrew Tarbell (GA)
    Jackson Yeuill (GA)
    Nick Lima (HGP)
    Tommy Thompson (HGP)

    11 Protected:
    Anibal Godoy
    Chris Wondolowski (DP)
    Danny Hoesen
    Darwin Ceren
    Florian Jungwirth
    Francois Affolter
    Harold Cummings
    Jahmir Hyka
    Marco Urena
    Shea Salinas
    Vako Qazaishvili (DP)

    Exposed:
    Andres Imperiale
    Cordell Cato
    David Bingham
    Fatai Alashe
    Kip Colvey
    Kofi Sarkodie
    Lindo Mfeka
    Marc Pelosi
    Marvell Wynne
    Matheus Silva
    Matt Bersano
    Quincy Amarikwa
    Simon Dawkins (DP)
    Victor Bernardez

If they don't see Salinas as a starter at LB, maybe they protect Alashe instead if they think he has trade value...

I’m very confused by some of these moves — why pickup Dawkins’s contract (unless they renegotiated a non-DP price), and let Muma, Colvey, Silva, and Mfeka go??

Possibly some of those guys they plan to re-sign on the cheap, not picking up option just part of the process?

P.S. I started a 2018 roster thread, mods feel free to merge, etc...

They're not "picking up" Dawkins' contract, he's already under contract for one more season, thanks to the previous regime. And they're too cheap to eat the contract and bring in another DP.

If we assume everyone whose option wasn't exercised is gone (they could be re-signed later but they seem unlikely to be protected), I'm guessing instead of Hoesen in my "Protected 11" it will be Alashe (note there is zero reason to protect Dawkins unless they're worried about his ego):

MLS announces available players for selection in Expansion Draft

PLAYERS AVAILABLE FOR SELECTION IN 2017 MLS EXPANSION DRAFT
    * indicates the player is eligible for Free Agency

    Francois Affolter
    Quincy Amarikwa
    Leandro Barrera
    Victor Bernardez
    Matt Bersano
    Cordell Cato
    Kip Colvey
    Harold Cummings
    Simon Dawkins
    Andrew Imperiale
    Lindo Mfeka
    Marc Pelosi
    Kofi Sarkodi
    Matheus Silva

Surprised to see Cummings on here, also surprised to not see Hoesen, that probably means they're trying to bring him back. Affolter not protected, Alashe protected... looks like the protected Bingham just based on his value.
I still predict none of our players will be taken. If anyone is, it could be Cummings based on potential, but it's tough to see LAFC taking a chance on a guy who was out all year.

11 Protected: (this is a guess based on the players available)
    Anibal Godoy
    Chris Wondolowski (DP)
Danny Hoesen - maybe not gone after all?
David Bingham - trying to get something in return for his rights
    Darwin Ceren
    Fatai Alashe
    Florian Jungwirth
    Jahmir Hyka
    Marco Urena
    Shea Salinas
    Vako Qazaishvili (DP)

Oh wow, Tarbell is no longer automatically protected...

Earthquakes Announce Protected Players Ahead of Tuesday’s Expansion Draft

The San Jose Earthquakes have protected goalkeepers Andrew Tarbell and David Bingham, defender Florian Jungwirth, midfielders Fatai Alashe, Darwin Ceren, Anibal Godoy, Jahmir Hyka, Vako and Shea Salinas, and forwards Danny Hoesen and Chris Wondolowski. Defender Nick Lima and midfielder Tommy Thompson are automatically protected due to their Homegrown Player status, while midfielder Jackson Yueill is automatically protected due to his Generation adidas status. Tarbell, a member of the Generation adidas Class of 2017, has graduated to the senior roster and is no longer automatically protected from selection.

The Quakes have left the following players unprotected and available for selection Tuesday: goalkeeper Matt Bersano, defenders Francois Affolter, Victor Bernardez, Kip Colvey, Harold Cummings, Andres Imperiale and Kofi Sarkodie, midfielders Leandro Barrera, Cordell Cato, Simon Dawkins, Lindo Mfeka, Marc Pelosi and Matheus Silva, and forwards Quincy Amarikwa and Marco Ureña.

The 2017 Expansion Draft will take place on Tuesday, December 12, beginning at 11 a.m. PT.

Oops looks like I forgot Marco Urena who is also unprotected... so replacing Urena with Tarbell gets us back to 11 protected:

    Andrew Tarbell
    Anibal Godoy
    Chris Wondolowski
    Danny Hoesen
    David Bingham
    Darwin Ceren
    Fatai Alashe
    Florian Jungwirth
    Jahmir Hyka
    Shea Salinas
    Vako Qazaishvili

Does FatAl have trade value, and if not, why are we protecting him?

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/12/10/mls-announces-available-players-selection-expansion-draft

I'd pick five of these ten players:

    Yamil Asad (Atlanta)
    Alex Lima (Houston)
    Sam Nicholson (Minnesota)
    Khiry Shelton (NYC)
    Pierre Da Silva (Orlando)
    Richard Marquez (Philly)
    Saad Abdul-Salaam (SKC)
    Raheem Edwards (Toronto)
    Matias Laba (Vancouver)
David Ousted (Vancouver) ... or maybe Clint Irwin to save $

Too bad for LAFC that they only get five picks instead of the ten that was standard until last year (Orlando/NYCFC got ten picks each, Atlanta/Minnesota five each), but they're lucky to be the only expansion team coming in.

Toronto FC are almost guaranteed to lose a player, they probably have the deepest (along with the best) roster in MLS history.

Boy the league sure has changed since the Quakes expansion roster...

I don't understand the protecting of Bingham, unless the story of him being on the outs is somehow no longer true. He's out of contract, so they could still lose his rights for nothing in the Re-Entry Draft later in the week.
