The Dutch deserved to win based on stats, which I read was something like 17-3 shots with two of the Dutch hitting the post. But there was something peculiar about the Miedema goal; it was at a fair distance & rather slow moving ball that most decent GK's should of handled. But Groenen's run right into the penalty box & subsequent commotion of trying to get the flop/penalty call, might of distracted the GK? It just a split second apart & she might of been blinded also my her own defender, but got to wonder if Norway didn't protest the goal for obstruction by Groenen? one interesting note is that when Norway plays Ireland, their going up against a coach that has some insight on the Norwegians, Colin Bell. Just mentioning because I've seen upsets based on something like that. Any thoughts?
Don't understand what you're talking about: there was no foul whatsoever by Groenen in that action, nor "flop". On the contrary, shouldn't Miedema's cross have ended in goal, I guess it's very likely that the ref would have called a PK for foul on Groenen. If Norway's GK was "blinded" or put out of time it was just her business: Groenen wasn't offside nor she had done anything that could have been sanctioned as a foul. Despite those stats, Norway could have brought home the result if they had scored the PK. I wonder what Van de Sanden was thinking: her hand-ball was so blatant that I really don't know how she could ever think to get away with it. And it's not even as it was required to avoid a goal or a dangerous situation: Norway's player had her back at the goal ans was moving away from the goal itself; yes, she was maybe trying to kick the ball for a shot, but it didn't look like it could have been very dangerous, from that position and with the body of the player positioned this way. I even wonder if Van de Sanden did that because she was eager to start one of her quick counter-attacks, but she should have known better anyway: her awkward action could have costed dearly to her team, and I guess her OL team-mates should teach her a things or two about how to handle situations like this one.
As the highlight video shows, it was a game of relatively few chances, but the Dutch had most of the possession. The 17-3 stats include missed crosses into the box etc, not exactly what you can call scoring opportunities. The goal, when it came, was a fluke. Miedema's cross wasn't met by anyone, it went through everybody and Hjelmseth was caught off guard because she expected Groenen to make contact. It's a difficult dilemma for the goalkeeper: Should she stay and wait for contact to be made by the player(s) in front of her, or should she move to the left and pick up the ball leaving the goal more open? I wouldn't call it a goalkeeping error, but there might be one or two in the business who had saved it. Ireland is a dark horse in this qualifying group. I'm not taking six points for granted against them, and neither should the Dutch. Colin Bell knows how to organize a team defensively. I look forward to see Ireland play Netherlands in November. I'm sure he picked up a few ideas from watching Ned-Nor. Shutting down the wingers is a key to stopping the Dutch.
The goalie wasnot at fault imo, as she was in the right place to act on a header she expected to come but never was, because the defender pulled Groenen back causing to miss the header and putting the goalie wrong footed.
Back to Toppserien again and the penultimate matchday coming up tomorrow. All matches are played simultaneously in the last two rounds. The championship is decided, so LSK have little to play for when they face Stabæk, who are trying to snatch that second CL spot away from Avaldsnes. The relegation battle is about to reach its climax. The direct confrontation between two candidates, Medkila and Kolbotn, the obvious match to follow. Grand Bodø-Vålerenga the other. The Battle of Bergen is also interesting. Looking forward to a couple of action packed hours after lunch tomorrow. 28 Oct: LSK Kvinner vs Stabæk (1:00pm) - only on NRK television 28 Oct: Arna Bjørnar vs Sandviken (1:00pm) 28 Oct: Røa vs Klepp (1:00pm) 28 Oct: Medkila vs Kolbotn (1:00pm) 28 Oct: Trondheims-Ørn vs Avaldsnes (1:00pm) 28 Oct: Grand Bodø vs Vålerenga (1:00pm) Oh, by the way: next year - for the first time ever - Toppserien will have a new standard ball used in all matches:
Toppserien 2017 - Matchday 21. A day of clarification. Champions League spots decided and relegation battle almost over. LSK Kvinner vs Stabæk 3-2 1-0 Marte Berget (Emilie Haavi) 4 1-1 Andrea Wilmann (Heidi Ellingsen) 34 2-1 Marte Berget (Guro Reiten) 56 3-1 Marte Berget (Sophie Haug) 65 3-2 Heidi Ellingsen (Mina Kjørum) 70 LSK managed to win in front of their own fans and lift the league trophy after the match. It was a highly entertaining game with attack-minded teams. Quality passing sequences from both teams. LSK surprised many by playing 3-5-2 in the second half instead of their usual 4-2-3-1. May be to confuse representatives from Manchester City watching. Stabæk's dream of stealing that second CL spot ended today. Still, they have some very good talents to build further on for next year. Heidi Ellingsen in midfield in particular, another strong performance today, but also Andrea Wilmann on the wing and a revitalised Synne Jensen in the #10 position. Stabæk will be a contender also next year - if they keep their best players. Arna Bjørnar vs Sandviken 2-0 1-0 Emilie Nautnes (Emma Fletcher) 39 2-0 Lisa Naalsund 89 (pen) A very even and open Bergen derby game. Sandviken had nothing but local pride to play for, but AB are still in the run to achieve a Top 6 spot and thereby a sponsored training camp in Spain this upcoming winter. They looked hungrier on the day. The first goal was superbly set up by Fletcher for Nautnes. Alyssa Giannetti then showed her class as one of the best goalkeepers in the league with a tremendous save. Josee Nahi received her third booking this season and will miss the season finale next weekend. Røa vs Klepp 0-1 0-1 Tameka Butt (Hanne Kogstad) 28 This game was marred by Røa captain Gunhild Herregården getting sent off shortly before half time for retaliation. It looked like an overreaction from the referee. The standard of referees in Toppserien has been debated heavily throughout the season. No Norwegian referees were selected for Euro 2017. There is room for improvement. But Klepp won deservedly in the end. Tameka Butt, in the week she was nominated as one of the candidates for the Player of the Year award, scored the winner. Medkila vs Kolbotn 1-3 1-0 Crystal Thomas (Silje Johansen) 18 1-1 Julie Hoff Klæboe (Juliette Kemppi) 32 1-2 Karina Sævik (Tonje Pedersen) 36 1-3 Tonje Pedersen (Karina Sævik) 87 A well-timed snowfall hit Harstad in time for kick-off, but Medkila weren't about to take advantage of it. Although it started well with Crystal Thomas scoring her first goal since arriving this summer. But shortly after, 16 year old Julie Hoff Klæboe scored her first ever Toppserien goal and Kolbotn turned the game. Kolbotn looked the better side in the second half and secured the win and Toppserien contract for 2018, but this 10th place position is their worst season since promotion in 1994. This loss means Medkila are alive only by a very thin mathematical option. They need to beat Avaldsnes away and recover 8 goals on Grand Bodø who play Kolbotn in the last game. Grand Bodø vs Vålerenga 2-3 0-1 Anne Lise Olsen (Theresa Nielsen) 25 0-2 Maren Hauge 57 0-3 Maren Hauge (Jennie Nordin) 70 1-3 Anne-Marthe Birkeland (Sara Eggesvik) 72 2-3 Trine Skjelstad Jensen 81 In the other match in the North, the scoreline looked worrying for Grand Bodø after 70 minutes with tiring legs and three goals down, and Medkila still within a chance to grab a point. But Anne-Marthe Birkeland once again showed her sharpness with her 11th goal this season, and brought new energy to the team. GB reduced the lead further to just one goal, and now look certain to take the play-off spot. Maren Hauge has had a fine second part of the season for Vålerenga. Her first goal was a nice individual piece of skill. Trondheims-Ørn vs Avaldsnes 1-3 0-1 Luana Bertolucci 8 1-1 Julie Adserø 21 1-2 Luana Bertolucci (Emily Gielnik) 67 1-3 Cecilie Pedersen (Emily Gielnik) 78 Avaldsnes secured second place in Toppserien and thereby Champions League participation for the third season running with an away win against Ørn. With the NM Cup final against Vålerenga coming up in November, they can still win a first ever title this year, and make this season a big success. In Trondheim hosts have problems with live streams because of poor capacity on the network, so very little live action was seen, but Avaldsnes scored three nice goals. Luana was particularly in a playful mood. Awards season is soon upon us. NFF and Serieforeningen for Kvinnefotball's official awards. Here are the nominees in all categories. I believe the winners will be announced around the cup final weekend 18-19 November. Goalkeeper of the Year Katlynn Fraine, Avaldsnes Alyssa Giannetti, Arna Bjørnar Ingrid Hjelmseth, Stabæk Defender of the Year Theresa Nielsen, Vålerenga Ingrid Ryland, Avaldsnes Stine Reinås, Stabæk Midfielder of the Year Tameka Butt, Klepp Gunnhildur Jonsdottir, Vålerenga Guro Reiten, LSK Kvinner Forward of the Year Anne-Marthe Birkeland, Grand Bodø Lisa Marie Utland, Røa Sophie Haug, LSK Kvinner Young Player of the Year Malin Brenn, LSK Kvinner Sophie Haug, LSK Kvinner Heidi Ellingsen, Stabæk Coach of the Year Hege Riise, LSK Kvinner Oliver Harder, Klepp Vanja Stefanovic, Stabæk Player of the Year Lisa Marie Utland, Røa Tameka Butt, Klepp Guro Reiten, LSK Kvinner - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - Congratulations also to Lyn Fotball Damer for winning their first ever promotion to Toppserien today! A 1-0 away win at Åsane in Bergen secured the Level 2 league title. Teen star Runa Lillegård (far right in pink head gear) was the match-winner for the third straight game. Lyn FD will be the 39th club in history to play in Toppserien when they make their debut in 2018.
We need a Norwegians abroad update now and begin across the border: Linköping with Kristine Minde and Frida Maanum won Damallsvenskan this weekend and can call themselves Swedish champions with two matchdays to go. The title was secured after a goalless draw away at Kvarnsveden. Minde has played 15 matches, scored 7 goals and had 3 assists this season. Maanum arrived late and has only played 4 matches and scored 1 goal. Linköping will play Sparta Prague in the next round of Champions League in a week or so. Ingrid Schjelderup was suspended when her club Eskilstuna United lost shockingly 5-1 at home to lowly Kopparbergs/Göteborg. Schjelderup has played 19 matches, scored one goal and assisted one goal this season. Eskilstuna are currently third in Damallsvenskan. June Pedersen's Piteå held Rosengård to a goalless draw in Malmö. Pedersen has played 19 matches this season, and has one goal and five assists for the fourth placed Northerners from Piteå. Andrea Frøshaug, who is/was recovering from a knee injury, signed a short-term deal with Limhamn Bunkeflo this summer, but I haven't seen her in any match squad this autumn. Either she is still injured or has left the club. Outside Scandinavia, the club seasons are still at an early stage. Maren Mjelde and Maria Thorisdottir were both rested on the bench when Chelsea outclassed bottom team Yeovil Town 6-0 in the English league. Chelsea still maintain their 100% record of four wins in four matches. Mjelde is the club's joint top scorer. Andrine Hegerberg was an unused substitute for a change when Birmingham City lost 3-1 away to Manchester City. Birmingham are now 7th placed in the English league. Andrine Tomter and FC Twente beat Achilles '29 7-0 in the Dutch league. Twente are currently third in Eredivisie, equal on points with leaders Ajax, but with an extra game played. Caroline Graham Hansen and Wolfsburg beat Werder Bremen 3-2 at home this weekend. Die Wölfinnen are joint leaders with Freiburg after six games. Caro has one goal and four assists so far in the Bundesliga. Ada Hegerberg is on fire these days. Lyon are topping the table with 7 wins in 7 games. Two more goals this weekend in the 6-0 win against Lille, took Ada's season tally to 11 goals - leading the scoring charts in the French league on that. Ingvild Isaksen has just returned to full training at Juventus after struggling with a heel injury since June. Nora Holstad Berge was an unused substitute when North Carolina Courage lost the NWSL Final 1-0 against Portland Thorns a couple of weeks ago. She arrived late in the season and has been used as a rotation player.
16 goals, if you count her UWCL ones (she's leading the charts there too). Almost all matches; Vålerengen, at least, won't be using it until 2020 as they have their own deal with Umbro, and a couple of other clubs may have their own deals as well. When the news broke 9 clubs had signed up to use the new ball.
Norway will play Canada in a friendly in Marbella, Spain. Date is set to November 28th, the next international break.
Trine Rønning is retiring at the end of the season after 20 years in top flight football, 162 caps for Norway (including four World Cups) and more than 400 competitive club appearances and 133 goals for Trondheims-Ørn (1998-02), Kolbotn (2003-08) and Stabæk (2009-17). She started out as forward in the Ørn years and then moved further back with time. She spent most of her years as a combative central defender or defensive midfielder. She was also a well-known free-kick expert. Rønning is one of the most decorated players in domestic Norwegian football. She won Toppserien six times (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2013) and the NM Cup 8 times (1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013). Internationally her best club result was a semifinal with Kolbotn in the Champions League 2006-07. For Norway, her best results were a World Cup semi-final in 2007 and Euro finals in 2005 and 2013, all three losses against Germany. In the last final she missed a penalty in regulation time, a moment she describes as the worst in her career. Trine Rønning will play her last game on Saturday, Toppserien's final matchday, when Stabæk play Trondheims-Ørn, her first club.
Matchday 22 on Saturday. We've reached the end of the season in Toppserien. Only the NM Cup final and relegation play-off matches left on the domestic calender after this. Much is settled already. LSK are champions and Avaldsnes runners-up. LSK want to revenge their defeat in the NM Cup semi-final against Vålerenga. Other than that, we still have some mathematical uncertainty in the relegation battle. Medkila need to beat Avaldsnes and hope that Kolbotn beat Grand Bodø with an avalanche of goals in order to stay up. 04 Nov: Sandviken vs Røa (2:00pm) 04 Nov: Vålerenga vs LSK Kvinner (2:00pm) 04 Nov: Klepp vs Arna Bjørnar (2:00pm) 04 Nov: Kolbotn vs Grand Bodø (2:00pm) 04 Nov: Stabæk vs Trondheims-Ørn (2:00pm) 04 Nov: Avaldsnes vs Medkila (2:00pm)
This friendly no longer appears on the NFF website (did as of yesterday) and does not appear on the Canadian site neither. Wondering if it got cancelled/postponed?
This was odd. To be honest, NFF never announced the match in a news bulletin. I only noticed the Canada match suddenly added on the fixture list. Most of the European teams are booked up with World Cup qualifiers in November, so I guess there is work going on behind the scenes to find new opponents.
Toppserien 2017 - Matchday 22. We've reached the end of the league season. We go for a regular matchday summary here and perhaps a more comprehensive round-up of the season after the cup final. Vålerenga vs LSK Kvinner 2-5 1-0 Camilla Kur Larsen (Theresa Nielsen) 3 1-1 Sophie Haug (Emilie Haavi) 26 1-2 Sophie Haug (Emilie Haavi) 73 1-3 Emilie Haavi (Guro Reiten) 75 1-4 Sophie Haug (Synne Skinnes Hansen) 77 1-5 Ingrid Kvernvolden 82 2-5 Elise Krieghoff (Camilla Kur Larsen) 85 A truly bizarre match. LSK tried out a 3-5-2 system from start in this game and struggled to pin back Vålerenga. Nothing much indicated LSK were the champions in the first half. Vålerenga controlled the game and looked like the better team for nearly an hour before LSK switched back to their ordinary 4-2-3-1, and the goals suddenly poured in at a ridiculous rate - four in nine minutes! 18-year old Sophie Haug got her third hat-trick this season. LSK-captain Ingrid Moe Wold has not missed a match since 2009 and made her 176th consecutive Toppserien appearance, that's eight full seasons as ever-present! I guess Hege Riise got some answers for the Manchester City game after flirting with an unfamiliar formation. We'll see on Thursday. Vålerenga now turn their focus on the cup final in two weeks. Sandviken vs Røa 0-2 0-1 Nora Byom Nilssen 33 0-2 Lisa Marie Utland (Vilde Hasund) 50 Sandviken without anything to play for, experimented with some reserves in the Bergen rain. A few key players are rumoured to leave the club this winter. Røa wanted a Top 6 position and won deservedly in the end. Fittingly enough, the best striker in Toppserien 2017, Lisa Marie Utland, scored Røa's last goal this season with a trademark header from a cross. Kolbotn vs Grand Bodø 2-0 1-0 Juliette Kemppi (Tonje Pedersen) 72 2-0 Juliette Kemppi 89 Finally something to celebrate at Sofiemyr. Kolbotn's fans had only seen five goals scored at home before today. The Finn Kemppi scored two goals against Grand's Finnish goalkeeper Välimaa, who played for Kolbotn last year. This is Kolbotn's worst season since promotion in 1994. Can they turn things around when the transfer window opens, or will key players like Karina Sævik leave? Grand Bodø will now face Level 2 runners-up Urædd in the play-offs for the right to play in Toppserien 2018. Urædd got relegated last year and can bounce back after one season at Level 2. Klepp vs Arna Bjørnar 0-0 Despite no goals, this was a highly entertaining game with plenty of scoring opportunities and disallowed goals with action at both ends of the field. Klepp missed Tameka Butt today, who has travelled home to Australia for a short stint before coming back for another season at Klepp 2018. Arna Bjørnar missed their powerful forward Josee Nahi because of suspension. Klepp, one of only three clubs who have never been relegated, finished fourth in Toppserien 2017, their best season since the turn of the millennium. Avaldsnes vs Medkila 5-0 1-0 Emily Gielnik (Elise Thorsnes) 14 2-0 Anna Jøsendal (Emily Gielnik) 43 3-0 Andreia Rosa (Francielle Alberto) 59 4-0 Francielle Alberto 84(pen) 5-0 Elise Thorsnes (Francielle Alberto) 86 Avaldsnes rotated a bit on their team for this match. First choice players like Katlynn Fraine, Pedersen, Luana and Ryland started on the bench, but the goals kept coming anyway. Some of them very nice goals. Five could have been more against Medkila who never had a chance. Medkila go down after five straight seasons in Toppserien, all hovering around the play-off or relegation line. They need to rebuild and may be recruit more local players than expensive mediocrity from abroad. Medkila have bounced back on the first attempt earlier after relegation and might do it again. Avaldsnes now look forward to the cup final against Vålerenga, and their best shot ever at winning a first title in Norwegian football. Stabæk vs Trondheims-Ørn 5-2 0-1 Rakel Engesvik 17 1-1 Trine Rønning (Cecilie Liane) 32 1-2 Elen Melhus (Cesilie Andreassen) 40 2-2 Melissa Bjånesøy 43 3-2 Synne Jensen (Mina Kjørum) 49 4-2 Andrea Wilmann (Synne Jensen) 88 5-2 Synne Jensen (Cecilie Liane) 90 Stabæk secured third place in Toppserien with this result. Trine Rønning, in her farewell match, scored a goal in the convincing 5-2 win, and cried her eyes out after the match. Her love for football is strong and she will definitely stay in the game for sure in a coaching role. Rakel Engesvik scored a beautiful goal from long range early on for the visitors. She must be hot on the market after this season. Stabæk have some very interesting young guns who will only get better, but they too must strike gold in the upcoming transfer window to stay competitive with LSK and Avaldsnes next year. Honour to them and to their epic battles! I sure hope so. I hope next year you will inform us about Second Division's situation from time to time, as you already use to do.
Sure, will do. We might as well take a look at the final standings of Level 2 now. Lyn directly promoted and Urædd to the promotion play-offs as mentioned in the previous post. KIL/Hemne and Kongsvinger go down. Btw, Fløya and Bossekop are polar circle clubs - even further north than Medkila. Bossekop, from the town of Alta, had to move this weekend's match against Åsane indoor because of too much snow. Final matchday results: Bossekop ...... 1-1 Åsane Lyn.................. 3-0 Amazon Grimstad Byåsen ...........1-2 Fløya Fart ................ 0-1 Urædd Grei ................ 3-0 Øvrevoll Hosle Kongsvinger .. 2-2 KIL/Hemne Top scorers: 20 - Melissa Wiik, Urædd 15 - Guro Ramstad, Byåsen 13 - Runa Lillegård, Bossekop (now Lyn) 11 - Veronica Amundsen, Urædd 11 - Julie Adserø, Byåsen (now Trondheims-Ørn) 10 - Celine Nergård, Fløya 10 - Marthe Enlid, Byåsen
Some quotes from battered LSK players after 0-5 against Manchester City last night: "In Toppserien you might get away with one or two personal errors from time to time, but against the best teams in the CL, you get punished immediately - and tonight we made some stupid errors. We lost to a better team, but most of all because we were passive and indecisive in key moments. We were too sloppy in our passing game and gave away the ball too easily." Cecilie Fiskerstrand, goalkeeper "Five goals. A bitter defeat, but City were strong tonight. Good on the ball with a higher tempo than we could deal with. They also won most 50/50 balls. We could not adjust ourselves to this game and spent too much time chasing the ball." Ingrid Moe Wold, captain and right-back "A subpar performance from us. We spent too much energy trying to repair our own errors. Personally, I can't remember the last time I had fewer touches on the ball in a game." Marte Berget, forward "Very disappointed and embarrassed. We were never able to put them under pressure. Too much chasing of the ball. In periods of this match we defended well and worked hard, but 0-5 is an ugly scoreline." Anja Sønstevold, left-back I think I will write a longer post after the cup final next week about the state of Norwegian women's football and the way forward, including all good and bad trends. - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - o - It's time to bring back the silly season set-up again and follow the interesting transfer activities until Toppserien 2018 begins March 24th.
