Carrick's game was not based on his goalscoring feats and I wonder if it's part of the reason that some don't put him on par with some of the club's greatest midfielders. His vision and defense splitting passes though, simply sublime.
Michael Carrick: Manchester United’s ageing but invaluable cog https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...urinho?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Copy_to_clipboard Sent from my LG-D802T using Tapatalk
Jose seems to indicate he wants Carrick to be given another extension to his current contract. The year is far from over, but it's hard to see how this would be a bad idea. He's shown so far that he still has an active role to play on the pitch, plus he's a much needed veteran presence in the locker room and one of the team's uncontested leaders. Pretty much a no brainer as far as I'm concerned, whether we get fresh blood in midfield or not.
Club just announced that Carrick has been given a testimonial. June 4th, 2018. They are bringing the 2008 team back together that won the Champions League vs a Carrick All Star team. Very well deserved.
Jose mentioning today that Carrick provides stability to the team, along with the mental freedom for the other guys around him to be more attacking, is a spot on assessment and tribute of his worth to the team. He proved it once again this past weekend vs Soton.
I don't think so. Only time he has been back are the Madrid games if I remember. Good lord, are we gonna call Anderson up? Get Owen Hargreaves to limp along? Apart from those 2, I think everyone from the starting lineup of our best team that year could still play. Tevez can ******** off though.
Carrick All star team needs to be a team of registas and elite retainers. Pirlo, Busquets, Xavi, Alonso, Iniesta all needed.
We should take the goals away and see which team can make the prettiest passes. I would legitimately be interested in watching that for 90 minutes.
Couple sites reporting the likes of Owen, Lampard, Gerrard etc on the other side. Bit disappointing that.
Michael Carrick may retire if Manchester United do not offer new contract https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...urinho?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Copy_to_clipboard
Think it's highly unlikely Jose will not offer Carrick another year, even if he brings in someone to replace him long term. If anything, not having to start every game or play all the time will be the absolutely perfect usage for Carrick at this stage. Plus would be nice to see him bow out on a high, having helped the team bring the title back to OT. And putting aside what he can do on the pitch, he's just a great presence in the dressing room as an unquestioned leader of the team with the likes of Rooney and Zlatan as well. The only way Jose would not give him an extension is if he somehow no longer was physically able to do so (via an injury or something of that nature). The Times has reported today that it looks like a matter of time before he gets it.
It has reached the point that his continued presence in the squad is hindering our ability to replace him. I would be fine with him leaving and being replaced by a starter.
Carrick's presence is definitely not a hindrance, more so than probably an unplanned necessity. Not really his fault that either no one could step up to replace him, or better yet that the club has failed to bring in a guy good enough to take his place. If Jose takes care of that need this summer, Carrick can become a (very valuable) bit part player, along with being the perfect fail safe for us next season.
If we expect Schweni, Carrick, Fellaini (and MS who left) to leave, we would need at least 2 mids to cover plus use of youth.
I get Teso's point though. The longer we wait to replace him, the more and more we stay dependent on him. I you keep Carrick around next season knowing he can't play every match, then in the matches without him we are already not playing to the highest potential of this squad. We need to replace him now. By no mean would I run Carrick out of here - coaching or something. If he wants to keep playing I'd be sad to see him go, but that is completely his right. But we have to find a replacement.
Carrick is not the issue. Finding a suitable replacement is. Carrick still could have an important role in the team as a squad player. United are over reliant on him precisely because we don't have any viable alternatives in that position. Bring someone of quality in to be our regular 6 and the issue is solved. There's no need to push him out on the team completely.
"Loyalty" is what has derailed this club in recent times by keeping players long past their sell by date while simultaneously blocking youth progression and leaving the team compromised as a result.
Don't get how you've come to this "either/or" conclusion to be honest. The issues you've highlighted above are manager related and stem of their own failures to bring in someone else or develop younger players on hand. It hardly has anything to do with Carrick himself. He's not usurping his place and United would be in big trouble if he wasn't there.
Don't get what you are struggling with. Carrick will be 36 in the summer. He has not been replaced. He is not mentoring or splitting time with a younger replacement. By keeping him around we are reliant, in terms of system and personnel, on his fitness and we suffer when he is not available. It is time to move on.
