    Another Messi goal tonight .

We could do with an ongoing stat showing him catching up (hopefully) to Cronaldo

Well Firmino is a truly , truly marvellous player who would take us to a new level but he’ll never reach anywhere near those two for goal scoring ..but you knew all that didn’t you ;)

I think they're still considered free kick goals, scored off indirect free kicks.
What you're apparently looking for are direct free kick goals.

Nah, indirect freekick is different, as it can't be scored directly. So they're not really indirect freekick goals either. Talking about stats (math), I don't consider scoring from indirect freekick being a freekick goal either. Otherwise every cross from freekick would be like scoring freekick, or Suarez scoring penalty from Messi's pass for example.

it seems that after 2014 world cup, messi is no longer being promoted by media as much as before. Anyone know the reason?

Because media needs a new & younger faces. If 20 year old kid scores a hattrick or 20 goals in a season, then media could easily promote it as future big star but if Messi hit hattrick they'd be like... the sky is blue. As Pep once said, he's pretty running out of superelatives to describe Messi.

For Messi, he'd need to win CL or it'd be consider average season despite still hitting 50 goals per season. Messi did that in 2015 by winning another treble, thus he easily won the Balon that season.

52nd official hat-trick and fk goal (most among active players). Dat fk hat-trick still eludes though.

one thing that i really love from messi is how calmly he takes his free kick,he hit it so naturally yet very deadly. that is skill belong to greatest free kick takers.
those who are unskilled, can only use strength, cannot beat the wall, are amateurs:thumbsup:.

Yeah the technique seems perfect. Unlike knuckleball this shouldn't risk your feet, and should be sustainable. You can see how smacking those knuckleballs really ruined Cronaldo's feet, hardly even beats the wall anymore.

very true. thats why ronaldo has never been a set piece specialist,in fact,he is one of the worst despite scoring many free kick goals.

For FKs that are a little farther away, you typically have to hit the ball with a part of your foot other than the inside of it to get more strength. Two of the greatest if not the greatest FK takers ever, Juninho Pernambucano and Marcelinho Carioca, hit FKs from a distance like that.

Knuckleball puts quite the pressure on the knee I think, and I recall reading some years a back that he had pain in the knee because of that. He's maybe adjusting the way he hits the knuckleball because of the pain, and it doesn't generate enough power or curve anymore.

I think it was 2014 when I read about his knee problem, and you can see a definitive change on this graph after that. But he continued taking them, and the problem probably just kept worsening, and now it's the end really.

Honestly I don't understand why he keeps taking them still, Juve has freaking Pjanic who has scored the second most fk's after Messi the couple seasons. Now he falls more and more behind because Cronaldo wants to hit them to the walls.
