Ricketts' LA Galaxy transfer progressing smoothly

JAMAICA'S ace goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts is expected to undergo his medical and fitness tests with Major League Soccer (MLS) team Los Angeles Galaxy, long before the January transfer window closes, according to his British-based agent Winston Clarke.
"It's pretty much in the hands of the league and the club, (but) we anticipate maybe within a week he should be joining the rest of the players," Clarke told the Observer from England yesterday. The transfer window closes on January 31.
He explained that Ricketts' work permit is currently being worked on by the LA Galaxy, which announced his signing late last month.
"The bottom line is it's well within the time frame. The authorities in the (United) States are working on that with the club and it's a matter of days now before that's completed," Clarke said, noting that the United States work permit process is less strenuous than what obtains in the United Kingdom.
To get a work permit in the United Kingdom requires that a player participates in at least 75 per cent of the country's official 'A' games over a two-year period. It also calls for the player's country of origin to be ranked no higher than 70 on the FIFA list, on average over the same two-year period.
"Most countries outside of the UK are completely different and the US is no different to that, they don't have those criteria and there will be no problem with Donovan getting a work permit," he added.
At the time of Ricketts' signing, Bruce Arena, the general manager and head coach of the LA Galaxy said he believed the Reggae Boy would bolster his team's defensive unit.
"I have known Donovan for a number of years as a goalkeeper with the Jamaican national team and have always been impressed with his physical qualities. After a closer examination of the player, I am absolutely amazed with his abilities both on and off the field," Arena said. The man, who joined the Galaxy after leaving his post as head coach of the United States national team, added: "It is also a position that we felt the need to improve and believe that he will be a great addition to our team and has the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in MLS."

Under-20s eye Canada friendly after CFU heroics

AN international friendly against Canada could be the next step for the National Under-20 team as their preparation intensifies for the CONCACAF World Cup Final Round qualifiers in March.
The Observer has learnt that the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is pursuing the match after the young Reggae Boyz returned home from their successful sojourn in St Vincent & The Grenadines yesterday.
The National Under-20 outfit, now the JFF flagship team, was given a rousing reception at the Norman Manley International Airport shortly after 12:30 pm, led by Allie McNab, special advisor to the minister of Sports, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange; Sports development, David Mais, and Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) vice-president, Raymond Anderson.
Green, black and gold balloons were released in the air as fans cheered on the youngsters, hugging and greeting them as if they had just qualified for the World Cup.
But it was well deserved as they overcame severe adversities to top the four-team Caribbean Football Union final round group with seven points. Jamaica drew their first encounter 1-1 with Haiti then whipped Dominican Republic 4-1 before brushing aside hosts St Vincent and The Grenadines, 2-0 on Tuesday.
St Vincent finished second with six points after defeating Dominican Republic 2-0 and upsetting Haiti 1-0 to secure a playoff spot against Honduras. Haiti clobbered the hapless Dominican Republic 6-1 to finish third on four points.
There was a sour note, however, as the team arrived home without their luggage which was left off the LIAT plane in St Vincent because there was no space. Team officials were understandably upset because they were not informed until they arrived in Barbados.
Furthermore, Jamaica's FIFA referee instructor, Victor Stewart, and assistant referee, Mark Sullivan - who were at the tournament - were bumped off the connecting flight in Barbados and will arrive home some time today.
Head coach Donovan Duckie said his boys "will take a break then return with some strength training, then continue .........

Reggae Boyz for The Nigeria Game

When the Reggae Boyz run out against Nigeria in an international friendly at the New Den Stadium in London, England on February 11, 2009, there could be two newcomers in the Jamaican lineup.

Twenty-five year-old defender Tyrone Mears and 23-year-old Darren Pratley, a midfielder were included in the squad of 20 named by the coaching staff of Jamaica’s national team to face the Africans at the home of the Millwall Football Club.

Mears, a right wingback who is listed at 5’10, is currently on loan at French club Marseille where is a teammate of the rising Nigerian Star, Taye Taiwo, who plays at left wingback. Mears, described as a pacy player, was previously attached to Manchester city and West Ham before earning a £1M move to Derby County from where he was loaned to Marseille.

Pratley, a six-footer, is a midfielder who started his career at Arsenal before joining Fulham where he made his professional debut. He was loaned out to Brentford before being signed by Swansea City.

Besides Mears and Pratley, the team is largely made up of overseas-based players. Only goalkeeper Shawn Sawyers and defender Eric Vernan, the most valuable player in the Digicel Caribbean Championships, the finals of which were held in Jamaica in December, are locally-based.

Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, recently signed by Major League Soccer (MLS) team LA Galaxy was also named in the team.

    FULL SQUAD: Goalkeepers - Donovan Ricketts (LA Galaxy), Shawn Sawyers (Portmore United);

    Defenders - Ricardo Gardner (Bolton Wanderers), Ian Goodison (Tranmere Rovers), Claude Davis (Derby County), Damion Stewart (Queens Park Rangers), Tyrone Marshall Toronto FC), Tyrone Mears (Marseille, France), Eric Vernan (Portmore United);

    Midfielders- Rodolph Austin (SK Brann), Jason Morrison (Ferencvaros), Jermaine Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday), Demar Phillips (Stoke City), Omar Daley (Bradford City), Jamal Campbell-Ryce (Barnsley), Darren Pratley (Swansea City);

Forwards - Marlon King (Hull City), Dane Richards (Red Bull New York), Ricardo Fuller (Stoke City) and Luton Shelton (Valerenga).

Jamaica's young Reggae Boyz will enter the CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago in March well prepared, after president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, yesterday confirmed a series of six international friendlies.

The series is set to kick off here in Jamaica on February 12, and continue on February 14 and 17, while the overseas legs will take place on February 19, 21 and 27.

"It is my view that if you are going to do well and qualify at any level then your team has to be engaged in a number of friendly internationals, and having reached the final round in Trinidad and Tobago, I quickly rallied my colleagues in CONCACAF and I am very happy that at short notice, I have been able to confirm a series of important friendly internationals which I am sure will help to prepare the team in an unprecedented way," Captain Burrell told the Sunday Observer from Montego Bay yesterday.

Jamaica achieved their place in the CONCACAF Final Round play-offs after topping the Caribbean Zone play-offs in St Vincent earlier this month against Haiti, Dominican Republic and the hosts.

The young Reggae Boyz have since been drawn in Group A, which will be played on natural grass at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago in the March 6-15 tournament. They will oppose the USA, El Salvador and the winner of the tie between Honduras and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Central American outfit Costa Rica, who are drawn in Group B alongside Mexico, Canada and the hosts, will kick off the series with games here on the first two dates at a venue yet to be determined. This Group will be played on Star 1 Artificial Turf.

Then regional powerhouse Mexico will arrive here on February 16 for a game against the young Boyz the following day, also at a venue yet to be determined.
Both teams depart the island on February 18 for Mexico City, where they will be engaged in the return leg friendly on February 19. Then two days later the Jamaicans will engage a Mexican Under-20 All Stars Invitational.

Then Jamaicans will close the series in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA on February 27 when they visit the training camp of the Canadians.

This game, Captain Burrell believes, "is important because they play a similar style to the Americans", whom Jamaica will open against in Tobago on March 6 in the second match of a double-header.

"This is unprecedented and I am very happy," remarked Captain Burrell. "The question is however, how are we going to fund this series of games?"

The JFF boss admitted that his federation had not yet "seen the funding" for the series of games, "but again I am confident and I am looking forward to the government through the Sports Development Foundation, as well as private sector sponsorship".

Captain Burrell said it was very challenging to put this series of games together, but he argued that "if we intend to improve and build our reputation as a footballing nation, then we have got to pay keen attention to the development of our junior squads, and in this regard we have embarked upon this very important path".

"This is why it is so very important to pull out all the stops to ensure that our youngsters get the international exposure, especially at this time, so we are doing every thing that is humanly possible to assist the junior players to qualify for the World Cup," he concluded.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals on March 13 with the final and third-place matches two days later. The four semi-finalists will also qualify for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup Egypt 2009, which runs from September 25 to October 16.

The game in Ft Lauderdale is still on so hopefully I can make it with my son.

LONDON, England - The Reggae Boyz could welcome one new face and two more familiar ones to the squad for their Friendly against the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the New Den Stadium, home of Championship team Millwall FC, on Wednesday February 11.

Wolry Wolfe, who was a part of the winning Digicel Caribbean Championships squad but did not play because of injury, has also been drafted in as cover for the injured.

Defensive stalwart Ian Goodison, who could be laid up for up to five weeks following an ankle injury in a recent League One encounter, will join Fuller on the sidelines.

Prior to the recent pull outs, Darren Pratley, of English championship club Swansea City had his debut postponed by injury. Pratley suffered a serious injury to his shoulder in their recent 4-1 win over Preston and could be out for two months.

First string goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts aggravated an old finger injury during Galaxy's a training session at the Home Depot Center and will not see any action in the game. Dwayne Miller of harbor View has already taken his place.

Barnes pleased with application of Boyz

BY SEAN A WILLIAMS Assistant Sports Editor
    Friday, February 13, 2009
LONDON, England - Head coach John Barnes says he's pleased with the way the Reggae Boyz applied themselves in a 0-0 draw in their friendly international against Nigeria on Wednesday at the home ground of Millwall FC.
[IMG]BARNES... the players showed commitment, heart and spirit
Barnes, in his third month at the helm of the senior team, said the core values he demanded from the players at the outset were on display in what many termed a "highly entertaining" game of football in frigid London weather.
"Overall the players showed commitment, heart and spirit and... I was very pleased with the attitude," said Barnes in a post-match press conference after the midweek humdinger.
Barnes, a former Liverpool and England favourite, conceded that the Jamaicans were second best in the first half, but applauded their dominance in the second, even as they failed to press home and win the game before some 3,000-5,000 spectators.
"In the first half we didn't create that many chances, but in the second half we controlled and moved the ball better. I'm disappointed that we didn't win the match as we had three or four clear-cut chances," he said, referring in part to Luton Shelton's two breakaways against Nigerian goalkeeper Ejide Austine.
Barnes hailed the Nigerian custodian. "The goalkeeper did his job well in one-on-one situations," he said.
    Jamaica's second-string 'keeper Shawn Sawyers - promoted..........cont.

Vernan set for trial stint at DC United

    Friday, February 13, 2009
LONDON, England - Twenty-one-year-old Jamaica and Portmore United right-winger, Eric Vernan, will depart the island in a week's time for the United States where he will commence a three-week trial stint with US Major League outfit, DC United.
[IMG]VERNAN... when opportunities like this come you have to take them
Vernan, who came on as a late substitute for the Reggae Boyz in their 0-0 draw against Nigeria in a friendly international here on Wednesday, was on cloud nine when he got the news.
""I feel good knowing that I will get the opportunity to play in a more professional environment. when opportunities like this come along you will have to take them seriously," said Vernan, who was adjudged MVP at last year's Digicel Caribbean Championship.
