Cargo insurance was ~13% in 1814 for reference. Halifax launched 4000 privateer commissions which effectively closed most American ports and aided British naval intelligence. The end of the Napoleonic Wars ended the need for impressment, and realistically the economic impact of privateering by both sides was a good reason for peace. Ultimately, no borders were redrawn and unless you want to claim victory over Tecumseh’s Confederacy (the real losers in the war), it was still a draw.
But MD was a state that had a large number of Catholics something that no other "southern" state with the exception of Louisiana had. Besides MD was barely a Southern state. Prior to the Civil War close to 50% of the blacks there were free at a time when many southern states didn't allow free blacks to live in them.
I know who the Know Nothings are and what they stood for. I'm also saying that if you look at the 1854/55 elections, you'll see that in addition to the pickups in Massachusetts and Maryland, they also had clean sweeps in Southern states. Those sweeps were the result of Whigs switching to the Know Nothings. The Southern Know Nothings were also less anti-Catholic and actually recruited several Catholics to run for office. However, in following elections, the former Whigs slowly transitioned over to the Constitutional Union party up until the Civil War when they quickly discovered they supported secession and became Democrats. Yes.. As a "border" state between the South and the North, Maryland was a mix of Northern industrialization and Southern plantations. However, that doesn't change the fact that, at the time, it's location south of the Mason-Dixon line and that it allowed Slave ownership meant that it was considered a Southern state. The North/South blending in Maryland showed when their legislature held a convention in a pro-Union city to decide if they should secede from the Union and decided to try and split the difference by not seceding from the Union, but also striking a conciliatory tone for why the other Southern states did secede. It was very much the intention of the Maryland legislature that they would remain neutral in the war. However, that backfired quite badly as their proximity to Washington DC, the fact that they were the state closest to the Confederate States, and the strong pro-Confederacy feelings in the state meant that Lincoln ordered the state to be occupied with militias from Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. It also led to the first bloodshed in the Civil War when pro-Confederacy Marylanders confronted a Massachusetts militia that was transferring trains in Baltimore and the militia opened fire on the "protestors".
