Are they buying Kyle Beckerman's shirt in Japan? Just sayin'. One theory might be that a rising tide lifts all boats. Paying Becks $9 million now might suck if you're making $800 a month as a developmental player, but if Beckham raises the profile and revenues to the league to the point where developmental players aren't making $800 a month anymore, doesn't that accomplish the same thing and more?
