Hello, I’m searching for any info based on match grades by reputable sources that had a player rated anywhere from the maximum of 9-10 or in the case of Mundo Deportivo and France Football in the 1970s and 1980s from 5-6. I’d like to know what are the top legendary individual displays and how they fare against eachother. For example, France Football in the 1974 WC gave Johan Cruijff vs Sweden a perfect 6-6 as maximum while El Gráfico awarded Oleg Salenko vs Cameroon in WC1994 a perfect 10 out of 10. These are the examples I’m looking for across the 3 major NT tournaments.
First example: the greatest individual display at Euro 1988, according to Guerin Sportivo, was Marco Van Basten with a 9 vs England
As you knew Cruyff vs Sweden already, and are not new to Big Soccer, you might know this but France Football's World Cup ratings from 1970 onwards (at least until the switch to marks out of 10 - those grades are shown for 2010 though too) are on here, revealed upon clicking on the scoreline, or in the case of Finals the pitch: http://www.everyfourthyear.com/1982/ So, 6 out of 6 is not so rare, but of major players, these received them for example (I'm going from memory partly here rather than checking all games again as I type): Pele - Czechoslovakia 1970 Cruyff - Sweden, Argentina 1974 Maradona - Hungary 1982, Belgium 1986 Zidane - Brazil 1998, Brazil 2006 Some other examples: M.Laudrup - Uruguay 1986 Hagi - Colombia 1994 Rossi - Brazil 1982 Thuram - Croatia 1998 Van Basten's 9 out of 10 vs England from Guerin Sportivo that you posted today on the Euro 88 thread must be a top rating in effect I think, given the precedence set regarding Serie A ratings (I haven't seen any yet above the 9 he got; it is the same as Maradona vs Lazio 84/85 and Verona 85/86, or Platini vs Genoa 82/83, Falcao vs Fiorentina 81/82 and those are rare as you know) (I posted this before I saw you made a post in this thread about that too!) France Football did grade Euro 84 games I know, and the overall ratings of Tigana and Elkjaer suggest a 6 wouldn't be surprising, but it could be a case of great consistency in ratings and I don't think I've seen that they or Platini definitely had a 6 in any game. Some ratings from La Repubblica are on the Euro 96 thread for example. Suker vs Denmark was a high one. Also WC 94 and maybe WC 98 threads have La Repubblica grades I think (including links to individual match ratings).
Yeah, it should be interesting to take the best ratings from all sources and cross-compare. Obviously not all sources have ratings, like GS did not rate WC82 or Euro84 but we’ll see what we can find and drop them here. Thanks.
Yeah, true, should be really interesting the more sources we get for individual games. So, we can see that FF gave Ortega and Batistuta (9 from Clarin too, but I guess Ortega was designated MOTM hence the bold type) 5/6 vs Jamaica for example in '98. I have a feeling sometimes 'home' sources will either err on the high side or low side for their own players, but it could just be a matter of different impressions and conclusions in various cases too which would be inevitable, although big differences sometimes seem surprising (but we saw a few examples even in Serie A ratings).
Clarin Kempes and Galván WC78 Argentina vs Netherlands Grade 10 Also lots of 9’s by other players. Bertoni, Passarella, Gallego, Fillol, Olguin
Yeah, so from FF and Clarin combined (maximum 16): Kempes - 16 Fillol, Olguin, Galvan, Bertoni - 14 Haan, Neeskens (and more Argentines) - 13
Those two games (plus ultimately winning the cup) are the ones that sealed Maradona's performance in 86 as the greatest ever in the eyes of most. Notice that while he gets a very high grade, the rest of the team receives rather normal grades. Surely it has something to do with the "Maradona singlehandedly led Argentina to the title" narrative..
That are the colors and chosen story of GS. Their own El Grafico gave an 8 to Burruchaga in the Belgium game and France Football gave him a 5/6 as well. The England match saw a 8 for Brown by El Grafico and 4/6 by FF for Burruchaha, Olarticoechea, Cuciuffo and a 5/6 (same as Maradona) for Pumpido.
Checking those La Repubblica ratings from 1994 and 1996 via comme's threads on those tournaments and the links posted in them, the closest thing is Roberto Baggio vs Bulgaria getting an 8.5 in the 1994 World Cup semi-final. France Football though, give him a 5/6 and do the same for the Spain game while La Repubblica give him only 6.5 in that one. Gheorghe Hagi's 6 out of 6 grade from France Football vs Colombia isn't matched by that particular Italian newspaper (obviously Guerin Sportivo might give him a better grade) as he gets 8 out of 10, the same as vs Argentina (FF gave him 5 out of 6 that match). I'm not sure if France Football could have given Suker 6 vs Denmark in '96 but it's doubtful looking at his total points, but possible if he was given lower than average marks in a couple of games (he got 14 points over presumably 4 games, unless not given a rating when just playing one half vs Portugal when Croatia had already qualified). No other La Repubblica grades from '96 seem to exceed this (just a few equalling it) but he gets 8 out of 10. There are some other 8 out of 10s for various players in 1994.
Corriere dello Sport Maradona WC86 Argentina vs Belgium Grade 9 1/2 (it’s the highest grade I’ve ever seen from Corriere)
