I thought that the EL spot takes the fourth place spot. Did te CFC screw the spuds out of the CL due to the same situation a few years back?

2012-13 season the Spuds were in 4th and CFC won EL. CFC took the Spuds’ spot and they missed out on CL.
Maybe things have changed since then

O/T but the battle for 3rd/4th in the PL is insanely thrilling to watch this year. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the best football league.

    ?

Arsenal just got walloped to Wolves, Chelsea almost fired their manager a few months ago, and are still struggling to beat average teams, while Utd have now lost 7 of 9. You have 3 teams that are doing their best to avoid 4th. Just that one of them are gonna end up there. How in the world is this evidence of the best football league?

Because it's competitive. The top 4 changes year to year. It's not like others where the same team (2 teams) wins.

When Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012, yeah.

They have. Countries can have 5 Champions League entrants. The only way for a fourth place team to get screwed out of qualification in a big league is if both the EL and CL winners come from that same league and both finish below 4th.

Yeah, the funny thing is that if the table ended up like this...

    City
    Liverpool
    United
    Chelsea
    Spurs (wins CL)
    Arsenal (wins EL)

...then Chelsea would miss out on the Champions League even if they finish in the top four.

Like the year Friedel had a spot with Spurs in the CL but lost it when an EPL team won the CL. Really unfair to the team that finishes 4th.

Aren't you happy that the season is just about over? The contest for first has been a drag, but the competition for 5th has been absolutely awesome. Nobody wants to be just an also ran for the league championship (how boring) when 5th place is so much more in the limelight.

Having 4 of the 8 European semifinalists helps the cause.

That, plus the English midtable clubs being very good should be a giveaway. There’s a reason Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs are all “struggling” with “average” clubs and are also all deep into Europe.
What other possible league is even a candidate?

First season the EPL is dominating, Which was predictable once they got the best coaching. Until 16/17 it was La Liga that usually had 3 or 4 teams in semis in the two continental competitions.

Less so this season because Real is in such a funk, but I think it's difficult to argue that anything other than La Liga is the league of the decade. The Premier League is ahead of it now, but that's a recent development.
