With a couple of good results in a row, Jim Curtin has now earned 202 points in 158 regular season MLS matches with the Philadelphia Union. Year: W - L - T (PPG) - GF/GA 2014: 7 - 5 - 6 (1.5) - 29/24 2015: 10 - 17 - 7 (1.09) - 42/55 2016: 11 - 14 - 9 (1.24) - 52/55 2017: 11 - 14 - 9 (1.24) - 50/47 2018: 15 - 14 - 5 (1.47) - 49/50 2019: 1 - 2 - 1 (1.00) - 5/6 Total: 55 - 66 - 37 (1.28) - 227/237 Curtin's first 11 matches: 6 - 2 - 3 (1.91 PPG) Curtin's last 147 matches: 49 - 64 - 34 (1.23 PPG) John Hackworth earned 89 points in 73 matches: 23 - 30 - 20 (1.22 PPG) Peter Nowak earned 87 points in 75 matches: 21 - 30 - 24 (1.16 PPG)
Where’s all the Curtin haters at now....#crickets #DOOP— Corey Furlan (@SoB_Corey) April 7, 2019 I do love when six years later people feel vindicated
LOL WHAT? Didn't most of those sob guys literally run away from big soccer because they couldn't handle any kind of criticism directed at them or the team? It's not too hard to avoid your ex if you just never go anywhere you know she is going to be.
It's been a great stretch. But even if you ignore Curtin's history, our record this season is not that impressive yet. We're currently tied for 10th in the league on PPG. I do think there are points available in the next 5 matches which could put the Union in a very strong position. At least the team has been interesting so far.
It's only one game: Changed tactics, used subs that changed the way they played and the game (not just like for like as in years past), had a plan going in and course corrected when needed. Maybe he's learning? Perhaps Ernst is having a positive influence on him? Maybe Earnie was the ironclad one after all? The losses to TFC and SKC don't look as bad now. The Draw in Atlanta...........that was 2 points dropped, let;s be honest. Last night was a game that the Union would have lost 2-0 in the past. The roster actually has talent this season. It does help that they can bring in legit game changers off of the bench like Montiero and Ilsinho. The Union have NEVER had that in season's past. This is the most talented roster of players the Union have ever had from top to bottom. If Curtin can't win with this team, then it's time for the Union to move on. By win I'm talking about finishing in the Top 4-5 in the east and winning a playoff game/ It'd also be nice to finally win an Open Cup too................
It still seems too early to be giving Curtin this much credit. Columbus and Dallas were both missing several starters, and Cincy is an expansion team. LA, Seattle, and Toronto will be better tests to see whether Curtin is becoming the real deal or not.
Nah, you hit 3-2-1 after 5 seasons of futility and coming up small I believe you’re entitled to spike it and publicly plan the parade route.
I’m sure the Hackworth haters disappeared when we were in first place in June. Doesn’t mean anything until we get to the Fall
Amazing what you might achieve when your job is on the line. After 5 seasons of No Accountability FC.
OFFICIAL: Welcome to Salzburg, Jesse #Marsch! The 45-year-old American is to take charge of our club as head coach in summer 2019. https://t.co/KvbvRgjzPg #WelcomeJesse pic.twitter.com/NWTIYYzGkW— FC Red Bull Salzburg EN (@FCRBS_en) April 15, 2019 quoting myself from... 2013, the Union probably could have hired Jesse. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/hostiletakeoverbitches-who-would-you-hire.1995537/#post-28870069
Time to retire this thread? Jim Curtin has now earned 218 points in 165 regular season MLS matches with the Philadelphia Union. No. He's doing great right now but I'm sure we'll be mad at him again soon. I just hope it is not too soon.
Sure I'll say it. For yet another season, the same old story. First Jim figures out an effective offensive scheme - or it is discovered by chance when a newer player gets a lot of playing time due to injury. Second, the Union win 4-5 games in a row and we all get happy. Third, the rest of the league figures out how to neutralize our offense and we lose/draw 10 in a row. Fourth - there is no fourth. Jim never figures out a new offensive scheme. I really don't think he knows how to coach offense.
Relax, it's not like they weren't creating chances last night. They hit the post three times, and also shot right at the keeper a few more.
We've been here before, multiple times. The issue has always been consistency. Curtin has never shown he is flexible enough to maintain this team's performance for a full season. He still hasn't done that this year.
Check-in with @PhilaUnion sporting director Ernst Tanner ahead of vital summer:-New deal for Curtin "a priority"...negotiations underway-Expect 1-2 signings-No offers yet for Trusty/Aaronson/McKenzie though "I know clubs are watching them" #DOOP https://t.co/QbxL6uLe6M— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) June 13, 2019
More like Sugardaddy would have to pay him a lot more if he had a playoff win on his resume, so it would be a moneyball move to extend his contract now in case they actually win one and his price goes up.
Trying hard to wrap my head around a “too successful, too expensive “ Curtin. But @Union42 raises an interesting thought experiment, what if the Union have a deep run or, since we’re bored, win MLS Cup. Jimmy is now a free agent with silverware and a big club steals away “the gaffer” with riches. Who do you want or think we get? Caleb Porter Pat Noonan Tab Ramos want to run a club? Some random German from Ernst’s Rolodex? Conor Casey if he doesn’t lose the interim tag?
