on the subject of ethnic germans i was recently doing some research on germans in brazil and found out that both dunga & claudio taffarel are of mixed german and italian ethnicity (not unlike myself)....also arthur friedenreich who some credit with scoring over 1,000 career goals had a german father.

some other notable brazilians of german stock include their greatest ever basketballer oscar (schmidt) and their greatest ever mens tennis player gustavo kuerten...not to mention gisele bundchen and a whole lot of supermodels...and in return we got kuranyi and cacau,
not a fair trade me thinks

That's nothing if you consider that none other than the great Ferenc Puskas also falls into this category. He was born Franz Purczel into the German minority in Hungary. Like many Germans in Hungary in the 1930s, the Purczels had their names Hungarized after General Horthy took over power in the late-1930s.

a german side with puskas, walter and rahn would of been an incredible attacking force.....the 1954 hungarian and german sides are the two highest scoring teams in world cup history with 27 & 25 goals respectively.

Actually that's not true. Indios saved themselves from relegation on a 1-0 win against Cruz Azul on the 2nd to last game but they didn't qualify to the playoffs on that. They qualified on the final game with a 3-1 win against Chivas. They needed to win by 2 goals and were down 1-0 at half time. They went up but were still only leading 2-1 until a goal in injury time by Hector Gimenez gave them their ticket to the playoffs.

Derby Cty., Dundee, & Scotland great Billy Steel emigrated to the LA area in the mid-50s and played for an American semi-pro side called Hollywood Danes. Steel also became a famous print and radio ad copywriter and wrote or co-wrote several well-known ad campaigns in the US before his early death in '82 at the age of only 59.

Especially when you consider that both teams hold the record for the most games played at the world cup. Brazil and Germany already played 92 matches each (Brazil in 18, Germany in 16 tournamnets) and only met once. :D
Again in 2010 they can only met in the semifinal or final, so they will probably not playing each other.

    Burnley 6-1 Manchester United
    Fulham 10-1 Ipswich Town
    Leicester City 2-0 Everton
    Liverpool 6-1 Stoke City
    Nottingham Forest 3-3 Sheffield United
    Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Bolton Wanderers
West Bromwich Albion 4-4 Tottenham Hotspur

I have always felt that this was a facinating occurance for the 1970 Italian WC team:

Grouped with Uruguay, Sweden and Israel, the Italians topped their group with one win and two ties, but only scored one goal total in their three first round matches! (1-0 vs. Sweden, 0-0 vs. Uruguay, and 0-0 vs. Israel)

They would go on to score nine goals in their next two games, four goals each in the quarterfinal (vs. Mexico) and semifinal (vs. West Germany) before crashing out in the Final vs. Brazil (4-1).

Possibly legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly's most famous "quote", "Some people think that football is a matter-", etc., was originally coined by American gridiron coach Vince Lombardi. Shankly was paraphrasing what Lombardi had originally said and always admitted to it. Shankly was also supposedly known for using other "Lombardi-isms" such as, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

[Absolutely correct, "The Dream" specifically credited the eye-to-feet coordination that he learned from playing football in helping him develop things like explosive low-post scoring moves, quick & athletic "hops" to elevate and get to rebounds, etc.]

Peter Crouch is more lethal for England than Wayne Rooney!

Unbelieveable as it may seem, Peter Crouch has actually got a far better strike-rate for England than Wayne Rooney.

Crouch has scored 21 goals in 38 matches for England, giving him a strike-rate of a goal for every 1.81 games played.

Rooney has 25 goals in 59 matches, which gives him a strike-rate of a goal for every 2.36 games played.

What's even more remarkable is the fact that many of Crouch's England appearances have been as a used sub, while almost all of Rooney's have been as a starter playing the entire 90 minutes.

Peter Crouch's 21 England goals have come from 2,094 minutes on the pitch. This gives him an average of a goal scored for every 100 minutes played.

Wayne Rooney's 25 England goals have come from 4,157 minutes on the pitch. This gives him an average of a goal scored for every 166 minutes played.
