But the Village People logo is *still* right next to Columbus Crew SC on that page (and on the MLS runner at the top of the page, where all the team logos are). Go figure. Guess they didn't get the word.....
Good bye Dayton Dutch Lions. Hello Austin Aztex! I love Austin. Some of the best food I have ever had has been in Austin. I like the choice.
Switching from Dayton to Austin seems strange. Perhaps PSV got a part ownership interest in the new team? Austin certainly has potential as a future MLS city. Here's the Dispatch piece on the announcement. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/sports/2014/11/26/1126-crew-affiliate.html
Everything I've heard about DDL is that they are not run very well and on their way out. I'm guessing The Crew got out of that as soon as they could.
Them leaving DDL isn't surprising at all. People make a big deal about the distance but it's not hard to put a player on a plane and have him back that night if he gets called up. Austin could easily send game tape of every match back for the coaches to review, they really don't have to go down there to watch players.
I lived there for two years. Yeah, zero presence in the city, and not very good as a team. I just don't get why that orginization even exists.
...and less than a week later, they don't. http://wrongsideofthepond.com/2014/12/01/dayton-dutch-lions-shuttering-usl-pro-franchise/ When they first started, didn't they have all kinds of a supporter scene? I remember when they played us (and I don't think it was this season), when they brought a TON of orange-shirted fans to CCS. At one point, didn't they have a whole stand opposite their main stand for DDL supporters?
Good riddance. Team is horribly run. Why did they chose Dayton? Never understood that. Team name doesn't help either. Just a massive fail. The only time I ever considered going to a game while I lived in Dayton was when LA 2 came to town.
From Twitter, it looks like the Aztex coaching staff were at the combine Crew SC hosted at Ohio State. This is a good sign. Manuel Buentello@MMBuentello9 A big thank you to the Columbus Crew Staff for their hospitality during today's combine. Top class event! Go Aztex!
Jardy and King both said that media were not allowed into the event. Makes sense, keep the good guy finds to ourselves.
Still great food in Austin but not a soccer town. I shared this on the MLS forum. I was there for both WC qualifiers in October 2013 (Jamaica and Panama). Went out to "US Soccer" bars. For the Jamaica game I sat in a corner with the smallest TV they could find and no sound. It was a Friday. I think they had high school football on but I am not 100% sure. I had my US jersey on. No one talked to me about soccer. For the Panama game on the 15th. I went to another bar with a US jersey. I sat next to a guy with a Mexico jersey on. Boy was he nervous and dying with every goal. Nice guy from the Austin (loved Mexican soccer, hated MLS). Again no sound. Again no one even asked either of us why anything about soccer. Again we were the only ones in a "Soccer" bar that cared anything about the games. Really good barb-q with a tequilla lime sauce. Like I said great food but not a soccer town. Contrast that with being in Portland for the US - Ghana game. I saw tons of people with US jerseys. Lots of talk before and after the game. I was sick in my hotel on the 6th or so floor but when John Brooks scored you heard it across the city. Or I was in Philly this year during the US vs Costa Rica game at RB arena. Same thing. People talking, people engaged, people knowing what was going on. Or Columbus when the US plays. . . And I said it once and I will say it again. None of this makes any sense. Either Precourt and MLS a colossal idiot getting bad advice with bad ideas (which is very possible) or there is something else going on here. There is an investor that is willing to pay money in Austin, they are afraid of the Barcelona academy there, SxSW money, Political crap or . . .
