Anyone hear about Chivas playing under that name again next year? Apparently someone on reddit heard this on Republica Deportiva. Wanted to know if there's any weight to it. Would suck if they're stuck as Chivas for another year.
If they don't get a buyer, why would you even expect the name to change? They are going to let the new owner pick the name. It would be daft to change it now and then have to change it again in a year.
Ah, interesting, thank you, I was not aware of that. That's not a good position to be in and MLS screwed up letting that happen. In that case, I think they would be wise to try to negotiate another year or however long it will take to transition to the new owner. CD TBD, anyone?
Plus they sold this weekend's game as the last classico. The name is changing. Here's hoping the league is smart about it.
Have we ever actually seen that explicitly stated? The only quotes I have ever seen refer to the rights to use the name "on a transitional basis".
Maybe a stupid question especially since i haven't followed this that closely, but do they have to play on next season? IMO we would be better off having a 20 team league for a couple seasons, let the air clear, wait to find the right owner committed to build them a stadium and bring them in 2017 with Atlanta.
As has been discussed before, it isn't nearly that easy. There are players under contract with MLS, an academy program, etc. To liquidate all that and recreate it would be a vast undertaking.
It's not really that vast of an undertaking. Nor is it something that MLS isn't experienced with doing previously. No the logistics of liquidating Chivas won't be what keeps them playing in 2015 if the sale doesn't go forward. It's more likely the simple fact that it makes MLS look bush league to be liquidating a team for the second time in as many decades that would keep them from doing so if they can't arrange something else for Chivas before opening day 2015 (either in LA or elsewhere). If the league has the money to keep them afloat sans owner then that is what the league will do at least for the short term (which includes 2015) as the loss of prestige from having to fold a team will be too much and could potentially be a stumbling block to their otherwise meteoric rise as a league since the dark days back in the early 2000's.
Back when Miami and Tampa folded there wasn't much to them. They had minimal FOs, no academy programs, and their total payrolls were around $1M. They also were worth squat, so they weren't worth selling. If MLS sells CUSA this year if whoever buys them pays the full price of an expansion club they're going to want to start making money right away, otherwise they'll be losing about $5M in opportunity cost alone. There would be a TON of costs associated with stop-start that weren't there back when contraction happened. That said, I don't disagree with you that image is a major, if not THE, major concern when it comes to this. All things considered, it just isn't going to happen.
Could they just call them LA FC for a year? The whole last Classico is what thru me for a loop on Chivas being Chivas next year. Why so blatantly lie?
How did it throw you for a loop? They won't be Chivas USA in 2015. The Clasico is between Chivas USA and the Galaxy. No Chivas USA, no Clasico. Now they may create a new "rivalry" between the teams and sell off the name to another company like they did with Honda, but it'll be something new and equally contrived.
One unconfirmed and unrepeated Spanish language broadcast does not even a rumor make. Even Garber isn't referring to them as Chivas anymore. The Chivas name dies 26 October after the final whistle as that's when the league's license also expires based on the terms of the sale. They'll have a new name next year.
As I was driving home today I heard on ESPN Deportes Radio that sources indicate that Chivas USA would be given another year with that name while they get everything set up for the re brand. It was super brief because they only mentioned Chivas USA cause they were talking about Cubo's debut with the Mexican national team but yea....hope these random rumors are not true
God help them if that is true. Another lame duck year and you'd not have to worry about finding them a new stadium. You could fit the entire crowd around the sideline of a city park field.
No way in hell. Vergara is out and with it the Chivas brand. It just won't happen. There is absolutely zero incentive for Vergara to allow the team to carry his team's name. He also took with him the two brands he was contemplating, Los Angeles FC and Los Angeles SC he has under trademark security, before he was forced to sell. They'll name it MLS LA if they need to, but it will not be Chivas USA.
I'm a TFC supporter and appreciate the three points but, honestly, Chivas don't need a rebrand; they need a pulse.
They need an owner, they need certainty. Right now they don't have a future, which means there is no interest in the present. If people know it will be staying around they're far more likely to stay around. I really hate the idea of a hiatus if you can't tell.
Hiatus is what will save LA2 There is no time to start up anywhere acceptable to MLS for 2015. It's not as good an option as moving them to. Sac for 2015. But hiatus is still better than being dead man walking. That's how they would be perceived as Chivas or a generic league run team playing in Carson again in 2015
