Well darn, read over the website, and even though Black/Gold are the primary colors, they kept red too...
Club Colors Strong, Powerful, Achievement, Triumph. Black and Gold embody the success, glamour, and urban texture of Los Angeles. A flash of red represents our home in the heart of the city. https://lafc.com/crest/ Red is still in the color scheme. So basically the same color scheme as ATLUFC. But different.
Pink instead of Red would have been more cool and more Hollywood, in my opinion. As things stand, LAFC's team colors are identical to Atlanta United's with the exception that - on top of everything else - LAFC's colors include two shades of Grey. Yes, indeed - the Black and Gold primary colors are outstanding and the logo is good enough. Adding Red to the Black and Gold mix just isn't all that original. I think that Pink, as the primary color for an away kit with black accents would have gotten a lot of attention from the mainstream media which is exactly what an expansion team needs and should seek.
Everyone likes the black and gold. The red seems so tacked on and unnecessary, so I started thinking about what could possibly have motivated it, then I remembered Vincent Tan is a co-owner. Now, I'm almost surprised he didn't manage to get them branded "The Dragons". I'm betting that at the very least, the second strip will be all red with gold accents. It might actually look pretty good. Just as long as the main strip is primarily black and gold, I'll be ok with it.
I'm guessing red will only be used as an accent. (i.e. behind the collar, adidas stripes, etc.) By the way, the artist who designed the crest was fully aware of Atlanta United. Which is why he used a different gold (ATL is actually closer to bronze), and did not include red in the crest at all. Over at Bēhance.com the kit fanatic Davide Lanave designed a series of MLS jerseys on New Balance templates. Pretty awesome stuff. Here is his design for LAFC:

I find it amusing people used 2 bay area companies for their example sponsors. I don't expect either one would sponsor an LA team if they're not willing to sponsor the Earthquakes. I like the hoop jersey though. And the Saathoff gold jersey.
Why? Many MLS sponsors aren't from the club's home area. For example, Alaska Airlines sponsors Timbers but are headquartered in Seattle. That's awkward.
Well that's different because Seattle has Xbox as a sponsor. SJ just recently got some no name sponsor, so if Tesla or YouTube had wanted to sponsor them, they probably could have.
