Sunday's near miss got me thinking about the ol Comb. I did what I do best, and I crunched the numbers.

In total, there have been 132 matches in MLS history (including playoffs) that have been won by 4+ goals, the requirement for the awarding of the Blowout Comb. I've listed all 21 teams to have played in the league, along with the number of blowout victories they've scored and the number of times they've been Combed. Just because I can't do anything without involving the referees, I've also listed all the refs who have been in the middle for a Comb-giving.

    Enjoy!

I'm pretty sure that like nine or ten of those blowouts came at the hands of Real Salt Lake.

LA and CHI are looking like the leaders of this, although SJ is close. I'm just not sure with their mixed history what's been counted and what hasn't. I say those three teams look to have the best ratio.

Just 2, actually. Once in 2009 and once in 2010...by a combined score of 11-0.

Toronto FC is obviously eager to be mentioned in the same breath as New England, FC Dallas, the Mutiny, the Rapids, and New York.

Stott is well ahead of the pack. That Tim Donaghy just couldn't stand to be subtle.

How can you have a better ratio than 4:0?

Sorry, there's some arbitrary cut off in my head for the number of years in the league. Houston probably could fall under "too new" or "old school".

So a blowout and a comb are 2 different things?
While we're at it, please define "blown tire". That's allowing a big comeback, right?

I've seen these for some time and still not sure of your meanings.

This looks bad, but I have a feeling that LA's combs over COL or DAL could double it.

A blowout and comb are the same thing. He just separated them to show the difference. For this chart, a blowout is when you win by 4 or more, and a comb is when you lose by 4 or more, but overall a comb is a 4 goal difference. You just don't want your team to be on the receiving end of the comb.

A blown tire is when you blow a 2 goal lead to allow your opponent to come back and tie it.

I am surprised that only 4 teams have more blowouts than CLBwith how much crew fans complain about their goal scoring problems. Not surprised they have had that many combs

Wow, good call. LA's 4 combs over Dallas went for a combined 23-3. Their 4 over the Rapids go for 18-1, but the Rapids have one of their own 4-0.

A 2-goal lead at halftime and don't get 3 points.

It'd be useful to separate SJ1 and SJ2, or at least provide that as a footnote.

The shocking part is that Houston only has 4 blowouts, being a dominant team in the league for years.

Not sure how extensive the data is, but it would entertaining to know the top 10 players in terms of combs suffered and combs committed. :D

I thought this was funny too:

    Code:
    NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION 5 - 1 DALLAS BURN (8/4 - Tim Weyland)
NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION 1 - 5 SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (8/8 - Kevin Terry)
NER-- 4 days, 12 goals, 2 combs, 0 Goal Diff.

The way it was always explained to me was that it was a 2 goal lead at any point in the game that was blown. I mean, if a team scores their second goal to go up 2-0 in the 65th minute, and gives up 2 straight before the end of the game, that would be considered more of a blown tire because you gave up 2 goals with 25 minutes to play.

I think we're going to need an official ruling.

No you are right. I said it wrong. Any blown 2 goal 2nd half lead. I was thinking of where a team goes up 2 in the first half, then gets one pulled back before halftime, and the game ends drawn.... is NOT a blown tire. What you describe is.

A blown tire occurs when a team has a two goal lead at any point during the second half, and blows it.
