Because of the pronunciation and the German language.

She was to busy with Clemens Fritz... :)

Because it is the right way to spell it when you are not using the umlaut over the vowel.

In German, and several other languages, you can use an "e" following the vowel if an umlaut in not available.

    For example:

    Özil (with the umlaut)
    Oezil (without)

    Jogi Löw
    Loew

    Möller
    Moeller

    Häßler
    Haessler

    Müller
    Mueller

    Matthäus
    Matthaeus

I'd like to be "busy" with Clemens Fritz, even though he has a pansy name, but that's a story for a different day.

The context is Werder's weak start; Schaaf wants to stress two things:

    1) directed to the Media and fans: Don't exaggerate the loss of Özil as the main reason for the Werder crisis, and as a consequence: Don't criticise me too much for selling him. (I don't see how he or Allofs could have prevented that sale, anyway; if not now, Ozil would have left in 2011 for free to join a big club, Real or another one, and then Bremen would not have seen any money)

    2) directed to his players: Don't hide yourself behind this excuse. It's always a team effort to succeed, and you could still do much better than recently, even without Mesut's presence.

His main argument is really not about Özil and his abilities, especially not in the long run. He sends a message to the Werder community about focusing on the present situation, not on what-if-we-still-had-Mesut, and fighting it by relying on their own strengths.

I think he is right in that second point; there is no use in whining, the current players need to step up for Bremen.

So it's really not about "hating" or slanting Ozil because Schaaf is angry about him; he's much too calm and too rational for that. It's all about the internal dynamics at Bremen.

Yeah, thank you for explaining :).

I still think he could have made hi point a little more explicit so it wouldn't be misunderstood... then, maybe he did and the press just showed the parts that's look more polemic.

what Cris said, and also spelling it 'Ozil' is like intentionally leaving out a letter of the name, like saying Cristiano Rnaldo.

I am a fan of Thomas Schaaf, the man bleeds Werder Green and orange, and he always looks to attack :D

I was very pleased when his Bremen team made it 2-2 against Tottenham :D

How is anybody supposed to know that with all these terrible color combinations they've tried over the past 7 years or so. The current kit is fashionably terrible.

Ehh, the heinous Werder uniforms, combined with his bug eyes, made him look like a grasshopper. Grasshoppers are invisible on the football pitch :p Clemens Fritz I could at least look at, even if he was playing like butt, which he usually was. And I still think CRon is disgusting.

Actually, I didn't notice Oezil much specifically for macaluca's amusement.

The ORANJE when Bremen won the 2004 Bundesliga, remember :D

Despite everyone telling them how terrible it is, it makes sense they splash it about in some form every few seasons for good luck

You're starting to get a little bit annoying but for the record the real test will be Tuesday since he's been blowing hot and cold in his time here, a couple of awesome performances followed by a couple "un-awesome" performances. I hope he is beginning to hit his stride so that I can continue to pat myself on the back (and demand thanks from my fellow Madridistas) for reviving his real Madrid career with my lovest induction thread.

Only 'starting'?? :p Need to keep trying then.

Yeah, I have only watched 2 games worth since he moved there, so thanks. This is how he was all his bremen career, so if he changes that in madrid then it's the first time.
