Wake Forest 3, Virginia 2 So if there was a better college soccer game this year, college soccer is in really good shape. (Narrator: There weren't. It isn't.) This was a great back-and-forth game between two top teams that totally lived up to its billing. Well played, a clash of styles, future pros, great goals. Dan Cortese. American sophomore Machop Chol put in a rebound of a shot by American sophomore Omir Fernandez to give Wake a halftime lead. UVa came back in the second half when Irakoze Donasiyano hit a left-footed blast from the edge of the box past surprise Wake Forest starting GK Dominic Peters, the American redshirt freshman who started his first game of the year. (Wake also made a change on its backline, I assume to get some size to counter UVa's bulk, giving Swedish freshman Alberto Catenacci his first start of the season.) As expected, UVa was able to convert off a set-piece when American freshman took a corner kick and hit an overhead scissor kick to put the Cavaliers ahead. But Wake came right back, and then some. On the edge of the right side of their box, American senior right back Logan Gdula caught American redshirt sophomore GK Colin Shutler off his line and chipped a shot over him to the far corner of the net to tie the game. Just 90 seconds later, a nice buildup by the Deacs put American sophomore Justin McMaster in alone with Shutler, who saved McMaster's initial shot but the rebound came right back to McMaster and he volleyed it into the net to make it 3-2. The Cavs pressed forward and had a couple of good chances but one goal was called back - rightly - for a player being offside and after a really nice series of passes, English sophomore Nathaniel Crofts was 1-v-1 with Peters but put his shot wide. He'll lose sleep over that one as he should have finished it. Again, a great, entertaining game. If college soccer could produce more of these, it likely wouldn't see so many top prospects opting for the pros. Alas, games like this are few and far between so we have to appreciate them when we get them. This W should put Wake back atop the RPI and I imagine UVa won't slip too far (if they slip at all) from No. 3.
As expected, Wake is now No. 1 in the RPI again. They have now beaten: 2. Indiana 3. Virginia (away) 8. Virginia Tech (away) 10. Duke 18. High Point 20. NC State And their only loss was away to 6. Syracuse. Six top 20 wins and four top 10 wins, two of them on the road, is really impressive. They finish the regular season next week hosting 11. Louisville.
NC State 1, Syracuse 1 Norwegian sophomore Sondre Norheim scored early for Syracuse, nodding in a corner kick from French senior Huge Delhommelle. And that was it for most of the game before American senior was fouled just outside the box in the 90th minute and English sophomore tied the game for NC State with a free kick that caught the upper 90 in a place no goalkeeper in the world was gonna save. Louisville 1, Clemson 0, OT American sophomore Elijah Amo scored in the 101st minute, converting a pass from American senior Tate Schmitt. American sophomore Tate Schmitt made two saves for the shutout, which dropped Clemson to 0-6-0 in the ACC. Updated records. I'll do the RPI later tonight after the late games. 1. Interested to see how Virginia's RPI is affected. The result for Radford has them losing today, when they actually won. UVA could potentially benefit from that once it is corrected.
And down the stretch we come. This is the last week of the season before the ACC Tournament starts. Here are the records, RPI and who plays whom in a week complicated and adjusted by makeup games after the hurricane cancellations. 1. Wake Forest ----------------- 15-1-0 --- 6-1-0 3. “Great job” Duke. Another f’n bullshit performance vs the tar hoes. How many times are u gonna lose before u finally get pissed off enough actually win a rivalry game for once!? idiots
Three (makeup) conference games and the final three non-con games of the season tonight. North Carolina 1, Duke 0 American junior Jack Skahan scored the only goal and American redshirt senior James Pyle made two saves for UNC’s third straight shutout and 9th on the season as the Tar Heels clinched their 4th straight Coastal Division title. Virginia 0, Notre Dame 0 American redshirt sophomore Colin Shutler made two saves for the Cavaliers for his eighth shutout of the season while counterpart American redshirt sophomore Duncan Turnbull (all 6-foot-7 of him) made four for the Irish for his second shutout in four starts. Clemson 3, Syracuse 2 American junior Tanner Dietrich, American sophomore Robbie Robinson and Costa Rican junior Adrian Nunez all scored for the Tigers to get them their first conference win. German grad student Len Zeugner and Canadian junior Massimo Ferrin countered for Syracuse. Rhode Island 2, Boston College 1 Swedish senior Simon Enstrom’s 9th of the season wasn’t enough as the Eagles fall three games below .500. West Virginia 2, Pittsburgh 1 American sophomore Alexander Dexter got one back for Pitt but it wasn’t enough to keep them from going two games under .500. Virginia Tech 2, Davidson 2 Twice German sophomore Jakob Bluemler and twice the Hokies couldn’t hold it. Here are the updated RPI, records and division standings heading into the final game before the ACC Tournament. ATLANTIC DIVISION 1. Wake Forest ----------------- 15-1-0 --- 6-1-0 13. Louisville --------------------- 8-3-3 --- 4-1-2 24. North Carolina State ---- 8-4-3 --- 2-3-2 84. Boston College ------------ 4-7-3 --- 2-5-0 10. Syracuse -------------------- 7-5-3 --- 1-4-2 61. Clemson --------------------- 6-8-1 --- 1-6-0 COASTAL DIVISION 4. North Carolina -------------- 12-2-1 --- 6-1-0 9. Duke --------------------------- 9-5-1 --- 4-3-0 3. Virginia ----------------------- 9-2-3 --- 3-2-2 7. Virginia Tech ---------------- 9-4-3 --- 3-3-1 5. Notre Dame ----------------- 8-5-2 --- 3-3-1 60. Pittsburgh ------------------ 7-9-0 --- 2-5-0 As a reminder, the top two teams in each division get a bye in the first round of the ACC Tourney. In the Atlantic, those two teams are set but in the Coastal, four different teams could claim second place. Still a lot to play for there. Sadly, the bottom three in the RPI - Pitt, Clemson and BC - are gonna have to go on a hell of a run in the ACC Tourney to have any shot at a .500 record needed to get an at-large bid. (All of them have the talent to do it.) Here's how they finish. FRIDAY Virginia @ North Carolina Louisville @ Wake Forest Duke @ Virginia Tech Notre Dame @ Pittsburgh Boston College @ Syracuse NC State @ Clemson
Is that how the seeding works, Sandon? I was under the impression the top two seeds went to the division champs and then 3-12 was a free-for-all.
I couldn't find any document that explicitly states it, but in 2016 three of the top four seeds came from the Atlantic Division.
SCHEDULE UPDATE: Due to forecasted storms and weather, No. 5 UNC and No. 6 @UVAMenSoccer will not be playing on Friday night. We will keep everyone updated on a potential make up time for Saturday. @GoHeelsGameDay @GoHeels pic.twitter.com/KbVPXdE1QX— UNC Men's Soccer (@UNCmenssoccer) October 25, 2018
🚨Schedule Update 🚨The game between No. 5 North Carolina and No. 6 Virginia scheduled for Friday, Oct. 26, has been canceled due to inclement weather and will not be rescheduled. pic.twitter.com/JgRPOYVviT— UNC Men's Soccer (@UNCmenssoccer) October 25, 2018
Why not play this game? Last I looked North and South Carolina and Virgina are all experiencing the same weather pattern, and do not see a rash of other games in the region being cancelled. Wake Med Soccer Park may be the reason, but that just makes UNC look lazy, and probably still b-----ing about not having their new stadium finished.
I agree! How can you decide to “not make it up”, when this clearly screws UVA over with their standing and seeding in the ACC Tourney!
Yeah, there are other fields available to them. Last year they played at least one game at Smith in Greensboro. Could probably get the WRAL stadium.
There is actually one closer than both, Durham County Stadium, just north of I85, turf field. They could make it work.
It's a mute point for North Carolina, as Wake Forest won tonight to clinch the overall #1 seed for the ACC tourney. Virginia is not going to make the top 4, and is guaranteed a 1st-round home game...so there's not really much to play for. LATE EDIT: Upon further review, Virginia could have caught Louisville for the #4 seed with a victory.
with all due respect guachodan, it's an ACC conference game, I believe it should be played (I am a former ACC student athlete in another sport, I look back with great fondness on all my ACC matchups) Besides I had to change my weekend plans.
Nothing reminds us of how insignificant college soccer is to the NCAA and ACC than a conference game between two top 5 teams with major consequences for the seedings of the ACC and NCAA Tournaments being cancelled because of rain. That doesn't happen in a sport the NCAA and ACC gives a shit about.
I actually agree with you. I'm just pointing out the actual ramifications. North Carolina is locked at #2, Virginia probably benefits from not playing the game seed-wise and everyone's going to both the ACC and the NCAA Tournament.
