AT least two new teams are set to join the A-League in 2018-19, with league chief Greg O’Rourke confirming that the expansion blueprint will be unveiled in February. Meanwhile a new A-League broadcast deal is edging closer with Thursday the deadline for broadcasters to submit their tender documents. A-League expansion plans revealed with two new teams to join in 2018-19
Oh dear.. I'm not sure that's the best idea? While I see why they would want to have broadcasters input, I'm not sure the end result will be the best. In the US, some of the best markets are ones that broadcasters would have never signed off on (Portland, Orlando, Seattle (to a degree))... hopefully they don't put too much weight on that and focus more on the ownership groups and the markets readiness for an A-League club.
It makes more sense in Oz than the US. There aren't as many population centers that the broadcasters might miss as opposed to the US.
I don't know.. It would seem to make it more likely they'd settle on "traditional" cities, IMHO. If you look at the other leagues in Australia it is mostly teams in Melbourne and/or Sydney and then a few other cities mixed in. While Sydney and Melbourne are the most populous cities in Australia, I'd be concerned they'd look over other cities that might not be as appealing to broadcasters.
My point was that besides Melbourne and Sydney most other places can only support one or two teams anyway. So there isn't much that will be overlooked IMO.
Looks like Fox Sports supports the Tassie bid, which is exciting. Tassie claims they can join the A-League tomorrow if they wanted to, so I really hope they will be one of the two teams that will join in 2018/19; it's especially important we capture Tassie before the AFL does. TV network support boosts Tasmania's A-League bid
Tasmania A-League expansion club in talks to sign Graham Arnold It should be noted that Tasmania and South Melbourne are currently the only two official bids, while every other bid is simply in the discussing stage.
It would have to be a massive pay rise to convince a coach to leave a big club with all their resources for a team in Tasmania who will be as big as Newcastle and the Central Coast. It won't happen.
Way too early for that.. I would think A-League would need a stable 14-16 team league before introducing B-League..
That's the point I think we should introduce a 2nd Division. We made need to think a bit differently at first and maintain a slightly different sort of League format than the traditional systems.
24 would cover more of Australia than 16. 30 would cover more of Australia than 24. Turtles all the way down.
Another group that pretends to represent an area without involving the area they say they will represent. They can bugger off as far as I'm concerned.
