Not sure where else to post this question. I am just curious if any of you understand more about the local TV rights and specially Fox sports networks. I am in Northeast Tennessee. The Atlanta united game is on Fox Sports South. I have this channel however it is showing predators pregame and no AU game. Very confused.
Severe weather has @ATLUTD and Crew game suspended. We'll supply updates when they become available. pic.twitter.com/getAuhNW8z— Bally Sports South (@BallySportsSO) March 31, 2019
Ok, but the game wasn't even on the guide for Fox Sports South on my cable provider. It had Predators pre game and Predators game during the AU game time slot.
I looked at the schedule and it had MLS at 6pm and the pre-game at 8pm. I assume those times are Eastern. You're not missing much. Several inches of water on the pitch, 44 degrees with 15 mph winds. You will get more info on the weekly game thread.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Sports_South Fox Sports South's coverage area includes Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, most of Kentucky and parts of Florida. It is, by far, the largest coverage by area and total market reach of any FSN affiliate. As such, the channel is often separated into several sub-regional feeds for the purposes of adhering to the various professional leagues' home territory rules. For example, Memphis Grizzlies and Nashville Predators games are only seen in Tennessee, most of Kentucky, northern Mississippi and northern Alabama. Meanwhile, Charlotte Hornets and Carolina Hurricanes games are only seen in North and South Carolina. Neither team's games are seen elsewhere within Fox Sports South's coverage area, although Predators games are occasionally rebroadcast in North Carolina. Since you're in Tennessee, it stands to reason that you get the feed that prioritizes a Tennessee team, but you still could get AUFC games when there isn't a schedule overlap.
Nope...not here. MLS was not on the guide until midnight. The above poster answered the question. Fox sports south doesn't show the same thing in each region at all times.
According to Programming Insider, the average viewership for the Orlando City/DC United game on FS1 generated 130,000. The information listed under "Major League Soccer". https://programminginsider.com/sund...rs-largest-ncaa-elite-eight-game-in-14-years/
Great find! we just need the Univision number for last Saturday's game and I'll tally up the ratings average. I'll be sure to incorporate that website in our linked sources.
Yeah I had that number already along with the UniMas number from two weeks ago the FC Dallas vs Colorado 229k. Just waiting for the Univision number from last week.
Yes it is a low key good number 217k is very solid for ESPN2 considering the numbers for the 3 MLS games aired last yr on ESPN2. 2018 ESPN2 games Game 1 115k Game 2 272k Game 3 119k Avg 169k
Yeah ESPN 2 just had a really terrible year with MLS games last year. Or are their ratings down across the board? Dunno, it used to be that you need 350k or more to make it on an ESPN property.
Well can't point it down but the two most likeliest reasons is...the last few yrs ESPN Networks while not as bad as some networks have been hit hard by cable subscription losses. Which is why you have to view cable TV ratings through a prism. Back in the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s ESPN was approaching 100m subscribers. It was easier to get higher numbers for sports even MLS i.e MLS Cups on ESPN back in the day LA Galaxy MLS Cup games. Now you've lost close to 15 million subscribers at ESPN in a decade. https://awfulannouncing.com/league-networks/april-cable-coverage-estimates-nfln-mlbn.html So that numbers have to be looked at differently sort of like inflation, back then 350k may have been the break line to get on ESPN, 15 million viewers less 10+ yrs later 250k maybe is around the number that ESPN finds acceptable.
Of course the problem with these threads year after year is that we have no idea what ESPN, Fox, etc consider solid numbers. Or what MLS considers solid. So we just set a Bigsoccer standard, which is not very helpful. That said, if 217,000 is now considered solid, I'd say the Bigsoccer standard is a good deal lower than it used to be.

You can deduce using logical sense what is solid and isn't solid by simply tracking the numbers through the years. In this case ESPN has suffered huge subscription losses due to cord cutting the last 5-10 yrs they went from close to 100m subscribers in it peak the mid to late 2000s to sitting at just under 85m subscribers. That will reset your calibrations of what is solid number for programming. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Soccer_on_television This is why from 2006 to 2011 when ESPN was showing MLS specifically on ESPN2 the ratings for ESPN2 were much higher than they were now ESPN had a much larger base of customers combined on its networks. As that customer base has shrunk it's only logical to expect to have to re calibrate your expectations as you now have 15m less of a potential viewing audience. There is also the noted but weird thing of people watching ESPN more than ESPN2. It's even weirder now that they both now are carried in the same amount of homes.
Well sure, if ESPN's subscriber base has declined by 15 percent over 10 years, then we can assume a corresponding decrease in MLS ratings of 15 percent, all other factors being equal. But that doesn't offer any insight into what the networks or the league view as "solid" (though I suppose it helps us in adjusting the seemingly arbitrary Bigsoccer definition of solid). Maybe that has been stated by the league or ESPN somewhere and I missed it, but as far as I know we're just guessing. You can do that to an extent, based largely on the fact that ESPN has not dumped MLS in all this time, but I would say you can only do that to a pretty limited extent.
This isn’t linear. A 15% drop in households doesn’t mean a 15% drop in ratings. I am willing to bet that MLS biggest demographic are the ones doing most of the cord cutting. With that being the case, ESPN might find a higher drop I ratings to be acceptable. My question is also, how many of these cord cutters can still get the game through an online streaming service? How many eyeballs is ESPN getting from these services? I am willing to bet that online viewing is making up for a large chunk of these tv losses. That being the case, it really costs ESPN nothing. The air the game on their network and stream the game online and probably still a decent rate for their ad spots.
