Verily, now the event will be jinxed! Montreal traveling to Salt Lake sounds like a TV exec's dream, no?
I dunno.. I gotta think Vancouver vs. Montreal would be the best result from an American TV Executive perspective...
This was always the risk for MLS when they let more than 1 Canadian team in, so I am thinking they knew about this possibility...
BTW, both satellite providers dropped Altitude before tonight's Rapids match and Comcast (the primary cable provider in Denver) could drop Altitude starting tonight.
Since its all 3 at the same time the assumption is that its Altitude playing hard ball. If Altitude was offering a decent deal at least one of them would have jumped on it and promoted themselves as the "only home" of the Nuggets, Avs, etc.
Also, if KSE cared about their fans, they would un-blackout the Rapids on ESPN+ so that those of us paying for that service can at least watch while their failing TV sports station grasps for its last breath of air before it collapses into oblivion!
Update ont he Rapids TV situation, all signs point to this being a drawn-out battle between Altitude and Comcast/DISH/DirecTV. I'm guessing no changes until the Nuggets/Avs season starts and even then it may take a while. Richard Fleming, the Rapids pbp guy, has tweeted that this may result in him and his family having to return to England, so clearly he's hearing something to suggest that there's a decent chance the Rapids won't be back on Altitude next season (if Altitude even exists by then). My biggest concern if they don't reach a deal is that KSE will go the FloSports route.
I think ESPN has to go all in on MLS at some point even if it means in the short-term sacrificing potentially higher rated college football games. That means showing matches at regular times on Saturdays or Sundays, with an Eastern Conference timeslot and a Western Conference timeslot. I think that's the only way for them to achieve better viewership. FS1 is a disaster. I'm not sure why but whatever sport they show seems to end up with tiny ratings compared to their competitors.
