Well, one of the co-founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley, is a part owner of LAFC. So it's money back into his old project. Also, $6M? http://www.latimes.com/sports/soccer/la-sp-lafc-youtube-20180131-story.html
Reporting earlier today from Ian Thomas (see his Twitter) and sports business daily reported $4m. Who knows. I wouldn’t put it past LAFC to realize how embarrassing it looks and lie to Kevin Baxter later in the day.
Telecom prices in Houston are highway robbery. I mean, most are because bandwidth isn't near as expensive as they want you to think, but Houston is particularly awful.
Looking closer. Operative words: "more than $4 million per year" More on LAFC's deal with YouTube TV - deal is for 3 years, and is valued at more than $4 million per year. https://t.co/n29QEobakm— Ian Thomas (@byIanThomas) January 31, 2018
They also say valued at. It is probably just me, but whenever I see that, I always add in “but were paid something less than that”.
We aren't New Yorkers out here. (And shouldn't be.) I see 'LA' as all the continuously built-up area in the rough triangle of the San Fernando Valley, the Inland Empire, and Mission Viejo.
From accross the pond. Maybe the limit has been reached with Domestic TV rights for the EPL. Forbes does not think so, maybe just a smal blip. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevep...al-doesnt-mean-bubble-has-burst/#5b0a93247376
Considering that soccer is increasingly popular amongst millenials and they are cord cutting, maybe this makes sense.
Anyone whose ever been to SaMo knows that. It is about as far from LA as one can get. I always feel like I’ve entreated “Get Out” when in SaMo. James
What's the logic in that? Why not just chip in LAFC games to all YouTube TV subscribers, given the zero marginal cost? Is it MLS mandated?
I'd guess they don't want the MLS national broadcasters having their potential audience limited. ESPN, FOX, and Univision pay the league big money for the national tv rights. YouTube TV is pretty small right now nationally but it is a bad trend to allow a local rights deal to go out nationally.
No, it would be a great trend to get more MLS games in front of more eyeballs (think what WGN did for the Cubs back in the day), but I'm sure you're exactly right about the TV deals forbidding it.
Because RSL's new broadcast streaming deal is geo-restricted, and RSL has very, very few nationally broadcast games, I wonder if it may be more about the national streaming rights, rather than traditional broadcast rights. Allowing anyone to watch the LAFC games would undercut ESPN's streaming rights.
Sure. It is the same idea. The national broadcasters or streamers pay for that audience. Allowing local broadcasters or streamers to put their product out nationally is competition that didn't pay for that right. The two things are pretty much interchangeable in my mind. I get YouTube TV through my Roku device. I can watch games on ESPN and FS1 via that. I can also get games on MLS Live right now and presumably will get them on ESPN+ via that device. Streaming/broadcast, it's all the same to me.
Referees for the national TV games (US only) in week 1: HOU vs ATL (Univision) - Allen CHAPMAN SEA vs LAFC (ESPN) - Jose Carlos RIVERO SKC vs NYC (FS1) - Mark GEIGER LAG vs POR (FS1) - Jair MARRUFO I'll include a running tally for the season starting with week 2's games.
ESPN networks will broadcast 31 regular-season MLS matches in the upcoming season and this summer’s MLS All-Star Game scheduled for August 1 in Atlanta. http://www.livesoccertv.com/news/25...ugust-1st-mls-all-star-game-on-espn-networks/
Only 3 of which are on ESPN 2? I haven't been paying attention to the national broadcasts the last few seasons. Is this new?
I believe it is, actually, I vaguely remember reading something about ESPN shifting most of the MLS games over to the mothership starting this year.
There were only 3 ESPN2 games last season as well. https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017/01/15/mls-unveils-ambitious-2017-us-national-broadcast-schedule
What does the referee have to do with the tv thread? I mean, feel free to make a running tally if you want, but why here? Do they choose the referee to make the national tv games more attractive or something?
