Idk I'm not a fan of either but that is a match I would absolutely watch if it didn't start at midnight for me with work in the morning.
Here's the full list of the 2014 FIFA World Cup TV ratings (and viewership) from the Morgan Wick website for comparison and contrast with the 2018 FIFA World Cup TV ratings (and viewership) if anyone is interested. 2014 FIFA World Cup Ratings Wrap-Up [January 6, 2015] http://sports.morganwick.com/2015/0...atings-wrap-up/#sthash.fwXV7iUV.cJYa8AKF.dpbs
What's funny about the way things are going is that via streaming a broadcaster knows precisely how many streams are active at any given moment. All over the air television ratings were statistical estimates, often pretty good, but sometimes quite bad. Instead of knowing that there was an estimate of 350,000 viewers they can say they know that they had 250,403 at the start, 374,221 by 5 minutes in and just before the end it was at 372,844, and know they are correct on number of streams.
Doesn't that depend now how you are "streaming"? I get my tv programming via YouTubeTV. If I watch a World Cup game on the FOX channel it is being streamed to me but who all is involved in that process? I'll admit I don't know if that content is coming via the FOX affiliate here in Houston although it is branded that way or if YouTube gets it directly from FOX. YouTubeTV knows I'm streaming it but does FOX?

With help from a World Cup lead-in, the Atlanta/Portland match on Fox drew nearly 1.1 million viewers on Sunday afternoon. SOURCE: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/skedball-weekend-sports-tv-ratings-6-23-24-2018.html
The WC is going to be good for MLS's ratings. Gotta think the Atlanta-Seattle game after the final is going to be one of the highest ratings in MLS history.
I posted this was going to be a record breaking year for MLS TV rating before the start of the WC as year on year TV ratings were up prior to the WC even occurring. It's a good sign that some people decided to stick around and watch the game. In a always good sign the MLS game had a higher average than the following prime time show on FOX that nigh with averaged 900k.
It was a very entertaining 1-1 game. Almost any game with Atlanta is entertaining regardless of score. Constant action in front of goal.
I know the record for any MLS team on ESPN is 1.5 million for Beckham's debut against Chelsea. Anyway, just for reference on how huge this rating is, it beat every single MLS CUP that was on ESPN other than 2009 (tied) It even beat MLS Cup 2003 on ABC. If Wikipedia is to be trusted, it's the highest rated MLS regular season game ever. I'll be shocked if the game after the world cup doesn't beat the Beckham record. (PLEASE BE GOOD, PLEASE BE GOOD, PLEASE BE GOOD!!!!!!)

It might turn out good. Yesterday's Cascadia Cup match between @SoundersFC & @TimbersFC was the best metered market overnight ever for a regular season game on FOX. It was a 1.1 rating/3 share. In Seattle it was a 2.4/7 and in Portland a 2.9/9.— Dave Clark (@bedirthan) July 1, 2018

I think seattle vs portland is a new regular season record. And then, Atlanta vs Orlando is actually quite terrible for ESPN :-(
I didn't realise it was on TV. Anyway after 6 hours of watching soccer I was approaching soccer burnout.
MLS matches on ESPN and ESPN2 averaged 272,000 viewers in 2017 (and 274,000 in 2016). They're currently averaging 276k in 2018 on ESPN and ESPN2. The Atlanta v Orlando game drawing an audience of 285k (by definition, above average) is hardly terrible.

This I think we are starting to become a little spoiled put things in context see below. In 2018 as of right now we are averaging 337k average viewer per game and averaging 332k across FOX ESPN and Univision. This will be the most watched MLS season so far ever. It was already a record viewing year at 276k before the WC bumped it up. Sets up nice for TV right negotiations in 2 yrs. MLS Cable Viewership Average[edit] Season Avg. Viewers Change Ref 2012 164,000 — [38][42] 2013 185,000 +13% [38][43] 2014 200,000 +8% [38][44] 2015 229,000 +15% [38][45] 2016 248,000 +8.5% [46][47][48][49][50] 2017 258,000 +4% [49][50][51]
Only if the execs are morons and don't realize the averages are up because of the World Cup and nothing else.
