    Somebody once told me (seriously) that the Nobel had been irrelevant since the year Garcia Marquez won ('82?), because he was a second-rate PC choice who nobody had ever heard of.

    I think this is and always has been a highly idiosyncratic process. I mean, look at their older choices. How many of them have stood the proverbial test of time?

    Really? I was just busy laughing at that WP article crying that this lady shouldn't win it and their justification is because Americans wouldn't have heard of her. And you reckon Europeans are up themselves?????
