the only thing i have to say is that is diffucult to compare old keepers with new keepers. Before 50 years the way that the players was learnig to play football is different from the moder way.In my opinion before 50 to 40 years players were playing football for their enterteiment and nowdays they play football mainly to gain money.
RELATIVITY is the key word! for example: How that OLD player did against others in his era versus the NEW one versus his competitors - Got it? For example: - Pele made 3 times the effort other best players in his era, would be regarded as BETTER *higher rated than i.e. a Messi with 1.5 times over his compatriots at the moment. - A Yashin in particular could have saved many PK's (in his era) as 2-3 times effort of others (same era) could do - so he would be rated as better than let's say a Buffon, Casillas in the present time with not "clear cut" above other GK in last decade!
Schmeichel better than Buffon?? Zoff was not absolutely better than Buffon and even that shit goalkeeper English England had only the goalkeeper of shit. Jasin is overrated because he won the Golden Ball, had the reflexes of a sloth, today many are superior to him
andoni zubizarreta was champion in athletic bilbao and goes to barcelona in the second half of the 80s He was in that cruyff team in the end of the 80s and first half of the 90s he plays 1986,1990 ,1994 and 1998 world cups and euros 1988 and 1996 He was not as good goalkeeper as the people used to think He fail in a lot of key moments from spain (world cup 1986,1990,1994,1998) and for barcelona (ucl final 1994) I believe the good keeper is the opposite The good keeper show how good he is in the key moments of the match Barcelona (cruyff dream team )and Spain(in the 80s and 90s) must have a lot of trophies if they have another good goalkeeper than arconada(euro 84) and zubizarreta Santiago Canizares not as reliable keeper too Casillas is the best spanish goalkeeper spain produce till these days(better than zamora, ramallets, iribar , arconada, zubi , cañizares etc) Id like to comment another thing Taffarell open all the doors to brazilian goalkeepers in the second half of the 80s and in the 90s After Taffarell few names from brazil(goalkeepers) plays in europe . He open the europe to brazilian goalkeepers and he was a revolutionary talent in his position Zico for example never did a goal in taffarell He had wonderful carrer and he deserve be in all world goalkeeper lists Another name here from south america is roberto rojas Im from Santos(Brazil) , all my family is closed with the club and we live near the santos stadum in the same neighbrohood, BUT im a Sao Paulo fan since i was child(check the profile pic) When Sao Paulo sign with Rojas in 1987 the club was thinking got signed with the copa america 1987 goalkeeper when Rojas had a wonderful performance and lost the final to uruguay Another great and revolutionary goalkeeper from south america. If my memory not fail Rojas had proposals from european clubs in that period of the world cup 1990 but he ended your carreer Theres a lot of names to mention forgotten in this list - cejas(argentina),pereyra(urugay and penarol), carlos (brazil - unlucky goalkeeper),gato fernandez (paraguay) etc
sergio goycoechea not in the list . as i did a post about zubi , goycoechea is not as gifted than zubi hes smaller and zubi had reach bigger than goyco Technically they were equal to me BUT in the key moments goyco used to show who he was zubi do not grow as goalkeeper in these key moments In valencia in 1995 , 1996 , 1997 he lost position to cañi (canizares) and did thesame kind of mistakes he used to do in barcelona
With the help mainly of the transfermarkt.com website (but also consulted other websites in some cases) I have obtained some ratios of some of the most outstanding goalkeepers in history up to the 1950s or so. The data is not 100% accurate since transfermarkt has incomplete information in some cases, but I think it still serves to give us a general idea. Initially I have only taken matches with the national team and players who have played at least 25 games (I compare only national team matches because I think it is fairer since there are leagues in which much more goals are scored than in others due to their different levels of quality): Goals per game: Clean sheets: I find the numbers of Zamora and Tesoriere spectacular, conceding less than one goal per game in those days was something “almost miraculous” and they also have a clean sheet percentage that is similar to that of some of the great contemporary goalkeepers like Buffon (0.438 ), Banks (0.479), Maier (0.453), Schmeichel (0.421) or Neuer (0.410). Of course, they are far from Casillas (0.611), Zoff (0.554), Van der Sar (0.554) or Shilton (0.528) but these goalkeepers played in an era in which fewer goals were scored per game than in that of Zamora and Tesoriere. Although I believe that they are less representative samples due to fewer matches, I have also obtained data from goalkeepers who have been internationalized between 19 and 24 times with their national team: Goals per game: Goals per game: Here we see that Frank Swift also moves at similar levels to those of the Spanish and Argentine goalkeepers, although playing less than half as many games as the other two. As a final comment I will say that Zamora's goals per game ratio is greatly hindered by the England 7-1 Spain in 1931 because without that match he would have an average of 0.778 goals per game, something incredible for the 1920s and 1930s twentieth century. That 7-1 score was the perfect revenge for Spain 4-3 England in 1929, which marked the English's first defeat against a team from Continental Europe (I think the English came into that match with a record of 23 wins and a single draw against to teams from continental Europe). For me Ricardo Zamora is one of the 3 best goalkeepers of all time and also the main candidate for best Spanish player in history.
I don't think goals per game are a good criterion for analyzing a goalkeeper. Since his defense system should receive some credits. The number of clean sheets is a little better. I don't think it's a coincidence if a goalkeeper spent several games without conceding a goal, it shows at least leadership, security, but clean sheets suffer from the same problem: how much is due to the defense system. Goalkeeper ratings in newspapers could be taken into account, in the absence of more in-depth data on past players, such as save of the opponents' shots on target, which is the most common method that Opta and other statistics companies use today (with negative points for errors resulting in a goal, If i'm not wrong, they give extra points for saves in open plays, penalties and big chances too).
