weather has been bazaar to say the least. We live in a beautiful tree lined neighborhood in northern NJ and those trees were coming down like you wouldn't believe. They cancelled Halloween for the kids and will reschedule for Friday. What has concerned me the most is the loss of power in so many communities in the area (including Upstate NY).
We're not well equipped as people to handle 'chaos'. That's why I watch "The Walking Dead" for pointers on survival ;)

WOW, what a loss of $$$ for the area. As it is and with the existing Blue laws in Bergen all stores were closed yesterday as well. I did get to take my kids to see Puss in Boots...freakin' Hilarious!

Jill: "Is it true a cat always land on its feet?" (as she's ready to throw him down a cliff)
Puss in Boots: "No! That is just a rumor spread by dogs!" :D

suck it up. This is one of the top 3 wealthiest states in the nation. It has one of the top school systems in the country and just happens to have access to the largest financial district in the WORLD. So you lost 3 hours? College is way in my past at this point but I busted my $^&# to get the best I could for a 'future'. That future has paid off and then some. So stop complaining about a little snow and be thankful that you as Colombianos have opportunities that your parents never had. Want to move to the Carolinas or Florida where you'll struggle to make ends meet but you'll have warmer weather, then knock yourself out.

I agree with lfsr. I enjoy the weather in S. Florida and is just 3 Hours away from Bogota. Nonetheless it ain't cheap, schools are horrible, salaries are not that good and there are plenty of externalities.

I think that given the choice I would move closer to either NY or DC, not quite sure how I will handle a week of snowstorms but I'd give it a try over preparing for a Hurricane...

ah ok, I guess I focused a bit too much on the thread title ;)

Trust me I'm not crazy about having to fork over $800 to buy a snow blower but I'm not shoveling anymore!

what the heck are you talking about???????

    1) I received my first degree at the age of 21 and College will always be in my present... this is my 11th year and will continue until my brain and pocket allows me to do so!

2)what is that about us as Colombianos supposed to mean? (I was born a US citizen and no matter where I would have been, I would have succeeded)

3)So let's say I move to the Carolinas or Florida... trust me... I am not going to struggle! I am not gonna go move and hope I land a great cleaning job, I will get a better job and then move...I agree with you that most people that make the move have to struggle, but trust me buddy... I wouldn't have struggle, and I am only staying here because I am 5 classes away from yet another degree.

    4) I care less if the streets are paved in gold around here, if they are covered of white feces!. I have had enough of the snow and I am leaving for a better life! better weather and I assure you... better pay!

I am glad that you are way pass college and you have a wonderful life under the snow!!!

As a matter of fact, my "colombiano" friend just moved to the carolinas to work for Bosch, all relocation expenses paid, 5K sign in bonus, 1 month free rent and a salary close to the 6 digits...

sooo... Snow!!! or a better weather and a better pay???? Not a dream!!!!

not a bad deal and a pretty decent QOL at that pay but what happens when Bosch decides to make cuts--not so unrealistic? That's the bigger distinction in being in densely populated areas (like NYC/NJ/Philly) with high opportunity for higher pay. Listen, I'm not saying you can't get a good job in the south. But odds are you'll have more people vying for less openings. I'm talking about mid to higher level salaries as I understand there is a high pool of laborers and labor industry in the area. However, as places like the Carolinas become 'flooded' by all types of migration (both legal and illegal) to follow the fools gold, this will require large local, state and federal investments to support that influx. These supporting branches include beefing up infrastructure, hospitals, schools, etc. What's made states like the Carolinas so attractive to large corporations are large state led and funded tax incentives, initiatives and subsidies. So your buck in turn should last a bit longer in the short term. However, when states are looking at anywhere and everywhere to
balance their budgets, they will look back to these corporations and their residents to collect big time. Remember, the grass isn't always greener;)
