    What would you say are some tactical blunders that possibly costed your NT/Club side a important victory or title in a crucial match.

    One of mines as a Brazil fan has to be Tele Santana's insistence at probing forward in the fateful Italy/Brazil WC82 match after Falcao scored to make it 2-2 when the better thing to do would've to close up shop and concentrate on defending for the tie.

    Blažević leaving Prosinečki on the bench for 80 minutes against France in the semis in '98. Had he came on right after we went down he could have organized a comeback.
    He also left Boban in the squad after half-time although he was having some problems with his leg. Boban made the crucial mistake that maybe cost us the final.

    Marcello Lippi leaving Baggio out while he coached Inter.

    Playing to your strengths is not a tactical blunder and the idea that "closing up shop" would've worked in that game is only good in hindsight.

    Trappatoni subbing cassano, gattuso and Del Piero to ride their 1-0 lead over sweden. probably the worst coaching job the european championship has ever seen. i cant imagine a coach doing a worse job in the future either.

    Steve Sampson "resting" Eric Wynalda vs. Iran in the 1998 world cup. Left all US fans perplexed.... good move that - in a win or get elminated showdown for both teams, and against a team that you do have a decent chance in at least scoring against, go ahead and put your best player and country's all time leading goalscorer on the bench in his last world cup finals. :rolleyes:

    Yeah, nice one Steve if the Bush administration had been in power then I would sworn that there was something fishy ><> going on.

    Mario Zagallo made a mistake in 1998 when he selected Emerson to replace Romario on his WC team. He paid for it in the Final against France. I actually told a friend before the WC Finals started and he laughed as if I was dumb.

    After Romario was gone, Brazil was left with three forwards -- Beberto, Edmundo and Ronaldo. Beberto was aging. He could not be the main man on the attack. Edmundo was crazy. Mario Zagallo, I reasoned, would not risk playing Edmundo in the knockout stage after what happened at Copa America Final when Edmundo punched a Bolivian player for no reason. At the more important games, Edmundo would sit on the bench, regardless of what happened. Ronaldo was brazil's only forward and if he got injuried, Mario Zagallo still needed to play him. As if I had ESP, Ronaldo got some strange illness before the Final and Mario Zagallo got no choice but to play him.

    98 Passarella-Redondo debacle. Leaving off the one of the best MF in the world for long hair.

    98 Gomez-Asprilla. Colombia main offensive punch is sent home after one game due to discipline problems. Really missed him against England.

    Of course the Bosvelt - Robben sub at Euro 2004 against the Czech Republic. Even our Prime Minister had something to say about it. A famous Dutch analist said that Advocaat should be killed because of that sub.

    Frankly, this thread was just made for Italians.

    Two that still kill me:

    Vicini starting Vialli over Baggio at Italia 90 in the semi-final
    vs. Argentina;

    1970 WC, Valcareggi's decision to bench Rivera in the final
    in favor of Mazzola. Both could have played together in mid-
    field and had done so before, many times.

    Taking out Matthäus and Basler about 10 minutes before end of the game by Hitzfeld against ManU when it was 1:0 to Bayern.

    In Euro 2004 Sven gets the award for he dumbest tactic disasters ever

    England beating France 1-0. Sven takes Rooney off and replaces him with Heskey, who promptly gives away a free kick for Zizou to score from. At 1-0 Sven decides to play the 8-0-2 formation with Rooney doing all the work upfront.

    England beating Portugal 1-0. Sven decides to sub the injured Rooney with Darius Vassell, making a Owen-Vassell striking partnership upfornt, each of them is about 5'6 and decide to play the long ball up to both of them. at 1-0 deciding again to NOT learn from mistakes of the France game and play the 8-0-2 formation. To top it all off he decides to take an attacking player off and bring Phil Neville on to hold out for 1-0 who then proceeds to bugger up his defensive job and giving Rui Costa enough space around the box to launch a pile driver.

    Not only in the final game, when Rivera came in with 8 minutes left in the clock, but throughout the whole tournament. Whenever Rivera was in Italy was in control, p.e. the quarterfinal against Mexico and the semifinal against Germany.

    ===============

    But to me, the most stupidest decision belongs to a brazilian facing the italians in the 1938 WC, when the coach of Brazil, Pimentha decided to rest half of the players that took Brazil to that game including the tournament's top scorer Leonidas and superstars Brandao and Tim because he wanted them ready and fit for the final game!

    Playing against the reigning Champs and a team that had demonstrated a solid block both offensively and on defense. What a dumbas$!

    I'll disagree here, but you have a point. On the 3rd Rossi Goal most of the team was pushing forward instead of trying to clear the cross from danger.

    Ok here's a blunder/omission that probably costed Brazil a WC. One of the all time blunder/omission's. Leonidas the Golden Boot winner of WC38 is "rested" in the semi-finals vs. Italy to be saved for the finals. Italy wins 2-1.

    Ranieri against Monaco in the CL semi. Sheer madness it was. We already had the away goal and they were down a man.

    Are you sure about that? Brazil scored through Falcao in the 68th minute to tie the match. In the 69th minute, Tele Santana withdrew Serginho (Forward) and sent in Paulo Isidoro (MF). The intent was to reinforce the defensive aspect of the Brazilian game. I think the major flaw was to start Serginho instead of Dirceu or Roberto Dinamite. Moreover, if defence needed to be reinforced, why did Santana not send in Edinho instead of Isidoro? What the hell was he thinking??????????

    Not selecting Romario for WC 1998 really cost Brazil. Emerson played well and deserved his place in the team, imo. Romario could have been drafted in instead of Doriva.

    For Mexico fans, it has to be vs. the U.S. during WC2002....Javier Aguirre subbed in an aging Luis Hernandez for Ramoncito Morales (who was arguably the most dangerous player against the U.S. during that match). Hernandez proceeded to dive throughout the game and stifled their offensive capability. It absolutely killed Mexican fans, especially after Mexico played so well against Italy and won their group. Everyone figured they were destined for greater things.
