Funny you should ask. Just yesterday in the Sion and Lausanne newspapers there was an article about how Martigny and Riddles have both turned down financing for a new stadium. As you could imagine, this does not make Constantin too happy.
For me, these are the top 8 places in bad need of a new stadium. 1. Zürich - Can't believe the biggest city in the country, with two of the biggest clubs, still hasn't got a proper football stadium. Embarrasing, really. 2. Ticino - If the southeners are to get back in the Swiss football map they very much need a new stadium, too bad there's so many small/medium clubs (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno, Chiasso etc.) and no big one. Lugano's got the biggest potential. 3. For a club always battling relegation they attract decent crowds, this has a lot to do with the proximity to Basel, Zürich and Bern. A new stadium would allow them to compete in the long-term. 4. Lausanne - Maybe it takes a new stadium to get them back in the ASL 5. Winterthur - With a population of 100'000 (sixth largest in the country) this fast-growing city and the club (currently 2nd best ChL crowd average) has got some good potential. 6. Thun - They are looking to bounce back again, a new stadium in the same scenery would be breath-taking. Where the hell did all the Champions League money go?! 7. Sion - Although Tourbillon isn't that bad it should be interesting to see what CC, the architect, can accomplish. God knows the fans deserve it. 8. Chur/Graubünden - The country's largest canton (by size) really should have a proper club and arena.
New stadium in Bellinzone AC Bellinzone is hoping to play in a new stadium by spring 2013. The new stadium has a budget of 200 millions CHF with between 10 and 12, 000 seats to be located in Arbedo-Castione (4 km north of Bellinzone). The commune is giving the land free to the club. Included in the project are commercial outlets. The canton and the commune must officially accept the project, but once they do ground will be broken quickly.
Great news http://www.baublatt.ch/news/projekte/spatenstich-fuer-das-neue-zuhause-des-fc-thun I didn't know they had gotten that far. With this stadium, Thun definitely should be in the ASL. Here's the official site http://www.gnfs.ch/index.php?section=home The Aarau and Schaffhausen plans are also looking good btw, check out these threads, really good reading http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=500520&page=22 http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=500500
FC Luzern: The Swisspor-Arena will be delayed until Feb 2011. It looks like the spring round will be the time this will be used for matches.
Evian disallowed by UEFA to play in Geneva for the time being http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/36457136-937c-11df-bb9a-00144feab49a.html
So the voters of Zurich reject the new stadium, talk now of upgrading the Letzigrund! How can that be possible whilst having to keep the running track? A souless shithole of a stadium, do the good people of Zurich really want their football clubs at all? Hopp GC
I saw the same thing. I guess they could go to a suburb, but that would not be ideal. Look what happened in Geneva. Biel/Bienne is moving along well. It will be a Soccer/Hockey multi-sports area.
After all this time I can't even put my frustration into words anymore. Hoping for a joint Football/Hockey arena in the Hardturm area by private investors. That would also put the ZSC Lions out of their misery.
Do you think lots of FCZ supporters voted against this so they wouldn't have to move out of the Letzigrund??
FCZ and GC have new plans for a stadium at another place, either in Zurich-Alstetten next to the future hockey stadium or close to Stettbach station, but which would belong to the city of Dübendorf and not Zürich
Swiss politics are complicated. The population can force a referendum on just about anything, so even if something was not scheduled for a vote, one could happen. Anytime public funding is going to be used on a project, there usually is some kind of vote. But if enough people were mad at some item of the plan, and they received enough signatures, they could force a vote.
So basically a group of Nimbys can stop building project? This totally holds Grashoppers back to evolve right?
A group could force a vote, but if the majority of voters vote for the project, they move forward. Such is the live in Swiss Democracy. Both GCZ and FCZ are stuck in this situation. The ground-sharing has gone on much longer than anyone expected. It has also kept additional revenue from International matches in Zurich. The last National Team match in Zurich has been a long time.
