FC Groningen has learned to capture a new foreign talent. 15-year-old American Stuart Ritchie has signed a two-year contract in the Noordlease Stadium, starting January 1, 2018, and runs until mid 2019. The left-wing defender, who can also defend midfielder, will flow after the turn of the year at the Team of FC Groningen under-17.

Before that, Stuart Ritchie is already in Groningen and is training with his future team-mates. He can also meet the club and his new environment. The American is eligible for three positions: left central defender, leftback and defensive midfielder.

Ritchie began his football career at Ballistic in Pleasanton, San Francisco. Last season, he played for San Jose Earthquakes, the MLS club where Danny Hoesen currently plays a lease. Ritchie has a British passport in addition to American citizenship. His father, who was present at the Noordlease Stadium, was born and raised in Scotland.

  10. FC Groningen now is the starting club of the most expensive players on the transfer lists for the Netherlands. Robben, Suarez, van Dijk, Koeman..
Ritchie, what are you waiting for!!! Become the most expensive Yank ever, You're in Groningen...no excuses accepted:D

  11. If Ritchie goes the track of van Dijk it is good news for FC Groningen, because he's going to count for a FC Groningen developed player from the time he signed until he's 21 (or was it 23?).
Groningen could cash 840 000 €€ from that 84M. transfer.

Transfermarkt says he's moved up to Groningen U19s from the U17s.

  14. I cannot confirm it as the club (with more midtable clubs) have a shit up date of their web site.

But let's assume it's right it means that the academy staff thinks it necesary that to grow he needs tougher resistance as a player, which is a good sign!

  15. I found this that seems to confirm it:
    https://gezinsbode.nl/2018/06/13/nieuwe-aanwas-fc-groningen

  16. In that same article it is mentioned that in the U23 teamthere are a whopping 8 players that are still eligable to play in the U19 team

Alleen spelers geboren in 1996 of later mogen in beloftenteams spelen. Dispensatiespelers zijn niet meer toegestaan."

    google translate

    Very Young under 23
The selection of FC Groningen under 23 counts no less than eight players who may also come in under 19 in the coming season. Five of them are allowed to prove themselves in the preparation. They have an asterisk behind their name. Five players come from other clubs. They are goalkeeper Nick Plomper (Ajax o19), defenders Kellian van der Kaap (Harkemase Boys) and Luuk Wouters (Willem II o19), the attackers Matthijs Hardijk (Jong AZ) and Thijs Dallinga (FC Emmen).

The promises Michael Breij and Gerald Postma start the preparation with the first team. Even if they stay there, they are still eligible to play under 23. Only when they have played seven matches or halves in the first team, they are no longer allowed to play in the promises. This applies to all players with the year of birth 1996 or 1997. For younger players, the rule only takes effect after eighteen matches. Only players born in 1996 or later may play in promised teams. Dispensing players are no longer allowed.

The asterisked players can still be put back into the U19, so the place Ritchie has is in a flux.
However it's an encouraging sign for him and the article shows FC Groningen doesnot waste time letting players stay in a place without enough challenge to their abilities.

I see they changed his hometown. Looks like they spelled it right. I guess it's easier to spell "Schoolstraat" than it is to spell "Pleaston"...

I'm wondering if they just mistakenly used his address. "Schoolstraat" means "school street" in Dutch, a pretty common street to have in most towns. And there is a Schoolstraat in Groningen.
