Yeah, I'm as down on Wenger as anybody, but not all of these things are bad and not all of them are Wenger's fault. For me, the true depth of Wenger's incompetence is too look at the French players who we've bought or played basically since the arrival of Koscielny against French players who have come to the fore for another team.

    Arsenal French players:

    Jeff
    Coq
    Giroud
    Lacazette
    Debuchy
    Silvestre
    Flamini
    Sanogo
    Squatch

    Other French players:

    Lloris
    Varane
    Zouma
    Laporte
    Kante
    Pogba
    Fekir
    Martial
    Lemar
    M'Bappe
    Matuidi
    Rabiot
    Coman
    Griezmann
    Dembele

This is just a staggering facepalm. I'm probably missing a few as well.

Much like recruiting players, young Germans is the way to go with coaches

Wumger has no alpha in the French market anymore

The days of signing a hot talent like Nasri are long gone.

There is a Netflix doc that chronicles the journey of some of the coaches in Germany and has interviews with some very good coaches. One thing that stands out to me is that how much more rigorous the German coaching badges are compared to USA. I have a "d" and the whole thing is a joke.

    I've said it before:

    Deschamps leaves the France job.
They ask Arsenal to talk to Wenger.
Wenger and Arsenal decide to end the contract early so that he can become the new France HC.

As for Loew, he's done well with their national team but I wonder if his tactics/motivation skills will have the desired effect week in/week out in the League.

Badges in Australia have us coaching a 4-4-2 but the teams are kangaroos.

Am I wrong or is 442 still a completely valid setup choice, still used at times these days by some of the best managers (including Pep?), but just one of many choices such as 4231, 343, etc, etc, etc?

Any formation is valid if deployed properly with the correct personnel. There are many on here (myself included) that would like to see us deploy a variant of the 4-4-2 inorder to get our best players on the field.

It is not the formation that is the issue but the lack of options u get

The 442 is basic and old school just like the fa

Do any of the managers really talk about formations in terms of 4-4-2 etc?

In reality the players have much more specific instructions in possession or out of possession

Imo it's more about the problem that English coaches and teachers think in terms of 442. The best formation for teaching is probably 343 or WM. Those formations force players to play laterally and vertically to cover space, where 442 is really keyed into vertical movement.

Doesn't really matter what formation they use in the badges. It's a matter of demonstrating what the "badge" should know. I don't believe a lot of coaches learn a lot in these badges, they are there to pass the test—at least here in the US.

Like the USSF E and F licenses, good if you have no other clue how to coach grassroots but if that's all you got to go on—the ceiling for those players will be extremely limited.

As posted above, the real value is in education NOT in the badge/license.

Do you reckon that is true. I thought he'd leave after next season. Anyway, I hear Rodgers and Low are both in running. I hope this isn't true

this is a WC year so we need to get this right. If wenger is going to be asked to leave then it needs to be done right after season's end (or he needs to announce it before so the Burnley game potentially can be a farewell and also so the new person can get to work immediately, get players in etc. post wc fatigue is always a factor and we potentially will have Iwobi, Asano, Elneny, Ozil, Xhaka, Mustafi, Campbell, Monreal, Ospina, Welbeck, Kos, Laca returning late.

Depends on Europa League/how far back we are in the league.

If we're in the semis of the EL or two points back of fourth, might make sense to wait.

    It does.

It needs to be announced early because he should be nowhere near this club after this season in any decision making position.

And we will not be anywhere near 4th place.

If, and only if, its clear we'll miss out on the CL next season.

Wenger should go regardless, but making an early announcement for the sake of making an announcement isn't a good idea IF CL qualification is at stake.

I don't like the idea of Josh Kroenke running things though: given a choice between him and Wenger, I'd choose Wenger in a heartbeat.

Hope you're wrong, afraid you're right.

I heard another powerful, depressing list yesterday. It was on the BBC 5Live podcast I think. Steve Claridge reeled off all of the defenders that Wenger has signed since he's been at Arsenal. There were about 20 I think. And perhaps 10-15 of those made your groan or shake your head. Maybe I'll try to find that and post it.

OK, I just played it back. It was funny. Claridge was reading back names and Wrighty was saying yes or no whether any of these would've made it into the famous back 4 that Wenger inherited. Let's just say that there were an awful lot of "nopes".

So here's what I caught of the list Claridge read (I suspect this is largely accurate but I know there are a few he missed, maybe semi-intentionally as he had a point to prove):
    • Lauren
    • Gi???? (I couldn't make it out)
    • Stepanovs
    • Toure
    • Bronkhurst
    • Tabliaridis
    • Cigan
    • Clichy
    • Senderos
    • Djourou
    • Eboue
    • Gallas
    • Sagna
    • Silvestre
    • Vermaellen
    • Koscielny
    • Squillacci
    • Mertesacker
    • Jenkinson
    • Monreal
    • Chambers
    • Paulista
    • Bielik
    • Debuchy
    • Mustafi
    • Holding
    • Kolasinac
    • Mavropanos
And the ones that he didn't say which came to my mind:
    • Campbell
    • Santos
    • Bellerin
There are probably a few others that were missed. And I don't know how the home-grown youth products should be factored in or not.

But in any case, that's at least 31 incoming defenders over that 20+ years. And can you honestly say that more than 3 of them were excellent defenders? And 3-4 more that were on on the cusp?
