I thought I'd burn more cigarettes into my arm by looking at some nice stadiums that we may never see the likes of here in DC. Today's entry, MK Dons. A bastard of an English League One club that has this new ground that we'd kill to see in Anacostia... http://www.footballgroundguide.com/mk_dons.htm So, what grounds would you love to see replicated in DC, erm, I mean Greenbelt?
Somebody said something about porn...I have a better chance of staring in one of those movies than D.C. getting a stadium.
Today's entry, Colchester's small but neat new stadium. Built for an amazingly cheap $27 million! http://www.footballgroundguide.com/colchester_united.htm DC could have built that from the cost overruns on the summer jobs program alone!
Love this thread...KEEP 'EM COMING, KEEP 'EM COMING! I'm sure it'll just be a little while longer till we get one of our own.........
I wish we had some stadium porn. RFK is like an old lady with flappy juggs and every STD know to man.
And another stadium - this one in the works (and boy has it been difficult!) - Brighton and Hove Albion's Falmer Stadium. Construction should start later this year. It's been a NIMBY clusterf*ck that would even amaze the likes of Marc Fisher and David Nakamura... http://www.seagulls.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Stadium/0,,10433~1327533,00.html Stadium is being built on the site of the University of Brighton (where I went to graduate school) - also adjacent to the South Downs, an area of "Outstanding National Beauty" in the UK (kind of like National Park status). So there was quite a fight over whether it could and should be built. Most of the obstacles were actually thrown up by the nearby village folk in Falmer. Anyway, interesting story if you're in to this kind of thing...
Leaving England for today's stadium - the excellent Innsbruck Stadion Tivoli Neu - as seen in Euro 2008... http://en.euro2008.uefa.com/countries/cities/city=1851/stadium/index.html ^ pre-expansion Love the beautiful mountain backdrop, steep stands and their proximity to the pitch.
I've been a vocal supporter of mountains being in the background of stadiums. I was a leader in that effort for Salt Lake and am on record supporting the building and/or moving of mountains so they can be used for scenery in urban settings. I'm not sure if this would be easier to achieve in Maryland or DC.
Well, Innsbruck is pretty ideal for mountain settings. It would be like putting a soccer stadium near Jackson Hole here in the US.
Moving on to Cologne for another major tournament revamped ground, the superbly symmetric RheinEnergieStadion...
Ha! Thanks? Staying in Germany, an example of a classically fan friendly Bundesliga ground: Hamburg's Nordbank Arena. One of Germany's various ground's with convertible terracing. Packed standing room for league matches, seating for internationals and other events. Great example for MLS. http://www.hsv-hshnordbank-arena.de/ ^ terrace ^ seats
Hull has an appropriately scaled stadium for us, but I am much more enamored of the planned stadium for Real Zaragoza in Spain. La Nueva Romareda Capacity: 43,000
Holy crap, that's beautiful. Porntastic even! I love the steep bank of seats and boxes on the right side of pic 1. Reminiscent of La Bombonera.
