Looks to me like this roof has ridges/rows versus a continuous smooth slope. That would make it much easier to control the water runoff.
You do get that is all we have to analyze at this point, right? If you want us to not discuss the stadium expansion until is done then let me know. I figured the Portland stadium expansion thread was supposed to be used to discuss the Portland stadium expansion. I never said what they have proposed was impossible so settle down bub. I just discussed it would pose some interesting drainage complications that wouldn't be as difficult if the roof sloped the other way.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the architects who designed this have a lot more architecture training than you do, understand the impact that weather has on building design and have factored that into things. Just a hunch.
Absolutely. Was just a topic of discussion. I will never understand why so many posters on BS get so upset, aggressive and grumpy when people talk about what this forum is aimed at discussing. Oh well. Sorry I brought it up. I didn't mean to offend the architects designing the expansion.
Well, I think the problem is that you don't understand what the point of this thread is. It isn't to pick apart the perceived architectural flaws based on a drawing by people with less than zero architectural education in their background. Save that discussion for people who actually know what the hell they are talking about. The purpose of this discussion is to talk about how the expansion looks, is it aesthetically pleasing, what does this mean for the local neighborhood, what does it mean for the fans, etc. If you actually believe that the architects and the Portland Timbers are going to approve a design that results in a deluge of water raining down on supporters for 90 minutes every game, well then I don't know what to tell you. As someone who has traveled to Portland to specifically visit Providence Park one of my favorite features was being able to walk down 19th st and look into the stadium. I loved the "old" look and feel with the wood roof. So from that perspective I'm a bit disappointed with the design. That said, I do really like the idea of the straight up design of the 4 tiers of seating. And that stadium was already the best atmosphere I've seen to date in person during my MLS travels. So adding a few thousand more fans to that sounds pretty epic. I brought a friend with me last year who had never been to a professional soccer game before. When I told him that the stadium was expanding, his immediate reaction was "when are we going back to check it out."
Remember folks.. We're all here for the same reason... To have some "alone time" with some stadium renderings. No reason to be fighting over a few blemishes.
I guess if you think that the purpose of this thread is to argue the architectural competency of the firm designing the stadium expansion, I guess that is your business. When I see a picture of a stealth bomber, I don't argue that there is no chance that it will get off the ground. I just trust that the aerospace engineers who designed it know what the f*ck they are doing.
This could be said about every single topic discussed on BS. That kind of makes a soccer message board pointless. "you are only allowed to discuss the topic if you are an expert." Last time I checked this was an online message board about soccer for regular people. Thanks for telling us what we are allowed to discuss. It definitely never gets old having people tell you that you aren't allowed to discuss something unless you agree with them. You must be a millennial. Go to your safe space. This is a thread about the Portland stadium expansion. That doesn't mean you can only discuss it if you love it and think it is spectacular. I tried to be nice but you are being ridiculous. I am openly admitting (multiple times) I don't know a hill of beans about designing or building a stadium. That doesn't disqualify me from discussing it on a message board. This isn't an architects message board. If I want to point it out that sloping the roof toward the field and stands makes for some interesting water draining (not impossible) engineering. I will.
LOL. I think there is a difference between discussing soccer related issues when most everyone who posts here has some background in the game as a player, coach, or even just as an avid fan. Its another thing entirely to act as though one knows dick all about architecture and worry that the design of the stadium isn't architecturally sound when that person more likely than not doesn't know their own @sshole from a flying buttress.
Read above as I edited my post to add more. I never said anything wasn't "architecturally sound". You are putting a lot of words in my mouth. I have said it is interesting and will add complexity. That is all. You are going crazy over a very small amount of comments on my part.
I hear ya. I don't think the thing gets built without proper drainage. Though your example could touch off a tangent of hilarious military history. And you have to forgive MLS fans sometimes for second-guessing the folks with the money.
And um, how do you categorize this sort of post? Do people who lash out like this think they're sounding intelligent? Superior? Sorry if I'm all Wavy Gravy today.
And there's nothing natural about them curves.. But that doesn't mean we can't all be nice to each other as we "appreciate" them.
Below is the balance of my posts about the roof. Please show me where I called it not architecturally sound, said it wasn't possible, said the people designing it were incompetent, said I knew more than the architects.
It would appear to me to be 5 posts too many. That's a lot of "Yeah, but...." comments. But hey, its a free country. You post as much as you want about slanted roofs. And I'll just point out that actual architects probably know more about architecture than you do. Because its a free country to do that too.
Hmm.. I feel as if my previous post asking people to move along from the current discussion may have been too obscure and/or people were distracted by the "alone time" reference, but here is a series of cute and/or funny gifs that will hopefully get my point across.
