I think the view from the new higher seats are better that what you get on the other side. Nice renovation.
That place is gonna be killer. I hope DCU can do a similar reno of its west side some day. Similar, but perhaps more constraining space issues.
I will be completely honest...i had to look up what in the world scusa was in reference to. Soccer City USA I take it?
Indeed. It was also the website of the Timbers Army's online forum for a decade plus. That's what comes to my mind when I see SCUSA.
Not sure if this will work, but the seat view feature is up on the Timbers and Thorns site for season ticket purchases for next year. Select a section, tap on the seat you want to look at and follow the prompts to see what the field would look like from your seat. https://www.seats3d.com/mls/portland_timbers/#/ Also, the tanner ridge seats are advertised as “climate controlled”. I’m not sure what that means. Are they behind glass?
The artificial turf looks bad even on seat viewer. Sorry, had to say it. When one day they figure out how to make grass work there this crazy place will be the absolute best venue in the league. I just love having a historic park, with a 21st century upgrade in the MLS stable of stadia.
This argument is so tired and old. The mls playoffs were in Houston last year on their grass pitch and it was so bad several player’s seasons were done. Good Turf is better than bad grass.
Show me where the money is for that, and I will probably still argue that there are better ways to spend it right now than trying to keep a natural grass field in better condition than our turf is given that there will be a minimum of 44 soccer games, and at least a handful of football games every year.
I'm not advocating for Portland to put in natural grass. Just noting that artifical turf is one knock, probably the only one, against an otherwise unique and otstanding venue.
I figure if Fifa rates the Providence Park turf good enough to play a World Cup game on it, then it’s not something to complain about.
Some of the Russia World Cup venues are normally turf, but have been converted to grass for the tournament. I wouldn't shut down discussion of the topic just because you don't like the viewpoint. That's what message boards are for. Just don't participate in the discussion if you don't like it. By the way, FIFA gets a lot of things wrong IMO so I wouldn't take their judgement exclusively.
And all of the fields for the WWC in Canada were played on turf, some of WC venues will go back to turf once the WC is over, and turf fields are increasingly used in world soccer at all levels, except where it is specifically banned. Even in some of those clubs are trying to get that changed...
I remember the players in the WWC really complaining about the turf too. A lot of folks would argue that FIFA doesn't get women's soccer.
*shrug* They are more than welcome to do so and I’m sure the MLS teams with turf have missed out on players because of it.
And it was a big freaking deal. Not sure I would use that as my argument that turf is OK. They actually filed (and later dropped) a human rights complaint over the situation. I'm on the fence over the whole turf situation but would definitely not be using the WWC as a pro turf argument. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/2015-world-cup-women-drop-artificial-turf-complaint-1.2921721
The game is different on turf, even the best turf. It really isn't as fun to watch. Is the best turf better than terrible grass? sure. That doesn't mean that the game should be played on turf, just means that is should be on decent grass. I understand why we have the turf fields that we do but it really should only be a last resort.
And we really don't need a discussion of turf in this thread. It will still be in Providence Park after this renovation is complete. If you want to discuss the merits/drawbacks of it, another thread would be called for, because this one is specifically about the current renovations to the stadium. To get the thread back on target, they're erecting some of the rebar for support columns above the platform they spent the last month or so building.
They're done pouring all of the second level of pillars behind the current roof. They have also started to build the scaffolding up to the top of those pillars.
First tier slab poured. Start of second tier Formwork, which I think the good weather is contributing to.
For you engineering geeks, here is a picture of a hard point that the tanner ridge level cantilevered precast seating structure will be hung off of. The 6 bolts look to be around 1 1/2” or 2” diameter.
That's an opinion, and I for one don't agree with it. Portland's paid a pretty incredible sum to add a relatively small number of seats, and I commend them for that. I'm happy for Portland fans and the whole club. As a soccer fan, I wish all that money and engineering and tech went into fixing their soccer problem - their field. Instead, they look at people camping out for seats and season tickets, they hear fans defending their turf, they chuckle, and say in all seriousness, there is no problem.
