The United Soccer League Premier Development League (PDL) has been termed the “top amateur soccer competition in the United States” in 2009 by the Houston Chronicle. In the January 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, 48 players with PDL experience were chosen, a full 75% of the draftees. Even more telling, many of those drafted with PDL experience are now having significant impact on Major league Soccer. Two-thirds of the players attending the 2010 UMBRO USL Combine have signed professional contracts.

The St. Louis Lions are a member of the United Soccer League’s (USL) Premier Development League, where players have the ability to compete in the PDL throughout the summer months in a professionalized setting while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The league is the proving ground for players that aspire to reach the highest-levels of the game, while providing affordable family entertainment within their city.

The St. Louis Lions team was awarded a USL-PDL franchise in 2005 and was named “Rookie Franchise of the Year” in 2006. President and Head Coach Tony Glavin is a former professional player from Scotland who has played and coached professionally in the United States since 1978 with the Philadelphia Fury and the St. Louis Steamers where he was a three time MISL All-Star and also won the MISL all-Star Most Valuable Player Award. He has coached the St. Louis Steamers, the Kansas City Comets and the Dayton Dynamo.

The St. Louis Lions are entering their fifth season in the PDL. In the previous four seasons The Lions have provided an opportunity for players to be exposed to professional scouts throughout the United States and Internationally. Currently the Lions have placed six players into the professional ranks in the US and Internationally.
